Windows 10: Windows reinstall from USB fails on reboot

I tried to reinstall Windows 10 from an USB stick keeping the previously installed software.


As soon as the installation process restarts the PC, the installer asks for the keyboard layout and after that the recovery screen is shown. Once the PC is restarted, the following error is shown:


0xC1900101 0x20017 (SAFE_OS)


According to online posts this issue is related to a failing driver.

Which error is the root cause for the failure? uicciso.dll?


I also checked the other log files but could not find any failing driver which I would know. setupact.log contains more than 300 thousand lines and is therefore not easy to analyze.

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk

 

a request for device descriptor request failed


Maybe it's time to step back from the current efforts, and start over. I suggest you read over this excellent tutorial and try all of its steps: [Solved] Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) for Windows 10 - Driver Easy. The one that may provide you with some easy relief is the one where you uninstall the device whose descriptor is failing, reboot, and see what happens when device enumeration recurs during boot-up. If you're lucky, it will fix itself.
