My old computer finally bit the dust so I bought new parts and had a new one built for me. I upgraded to windows 10 for free years ago, and as far as I could find that means that I don't have a key and instead have a digital license. The old pc no longer exists, so I can't try to go back and find it now. I went through the support website, it didn't work, and the contact support button that showed up at the bottom changes colour and nothing else. I tried phoning in several times, a robot redirects me to the website that doesn't work. Trying through the Get Help app, quite circularly, tells me

Basic facts

The upgrade:

• Upgraded a couple of days ago from a properly licensed version of Windows 8.1.
• Asked during install to input product key; skipped it as didn't have the key to hand.
  
• Tried to activate post-upgrade but received error to say key blocked.

Next steps:

• Contacted ASUS tech support.
• Told to register laptop online; registered laptop.
• Then told no service for refurbished laptops so no key.

Question: on the basis that: (a) MS say that they will upgrade any compatible device running a genuine copy of Win 7 / 8 / 8.1, and (b) my device is compatible, and (c) it was running a genuine copy of Win 8.1,
then will MS provide me with a key given that ASUS has refused to?

 

Windows saying not activated after motherboard upgrade

Hi,

I recently upgraded some PC parts (new motherboard, RAM, processor, video card) and ever since then I have a watermark in the bottom right of my display reading "Activate Windows - Go to Settings to activate Windows."

I took advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 back when they were allowing Windows 8 users to upgrade to Windows 10. I don't remember receiving an activation key during this upgrade.

I've read online that installing a new motherboard can occasionally cause issues with OS activation. How can I reactivate my Windows without having to purchase Windows 10.

Some things to note:

• This watermark was not there prior to installing the new motherboard
• As some places (and a Microsoft Tech Support member) suggested, typing the query "wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey" into CMD just returns with "OA3xOriginalProductKey". The Microsoft Support member seemed confused by this and said there was nothing further she could do.

• Select Go to Store, and check to see if a valid license is available for your device. If a license isn't available, you'll need to buy Windows from the Store.
