Windows 10: Windows search box greys out when clicked

Sometime back in May? an Windows X update was loaded into my computer overnight, next morning the search feature in File Explorer goes grey every time it is clicked. The only way to remedy this was to uninstall the update. The next morning, Windows updated again with the same result. Once again I uninstalled the update and again it worked. I then turned off Windows Updates only to have it happen again several days later. Since then I have followed every possible solution to stop windows updates from auto installing including adding a registry stop key... Nothing is working keeping the updat

  Right click on the task bar.
  
• 
  Go to Cortana.
  
• 
  Click on show search box.
  

Now check if you are able to find search box.

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.

 

How do I delete search suggestions when I click on a search box?

In Windows 10 when I click on a search box on a website I am visiting previous suggestions from past searches drop down and the list is becoming rather long. How do I delete these suggestions?
