Windows Security AV thinks my PC is still infected

I plugged in a USB thumb drive in my PC and it was infected with a worm, Microsoft Security did a good job "blocking" the worm from spreading to my system, some .exe files were deleted by the AV itself and other files I removed them manually from the USB using cmd del *.exe, I then removed the USB thumb drive but the AV still sends notifications the my "unconnected" D:\ drive is infected, I click on start actions and then it starts doing a quick scan but it still sends notifications my D:\ drive is infected.I have only a C:\ partition and any external drive I connect gets the drive letter dr

I was hoping someone could give me a list of step by step instructions you use as a guide to clean virus, malware...etc. so I can keep my PC clean if it gets infected.

    thx

What are the chances of getting viruses from secure online games?

+1 to what Bjorn_Of_Iceland said. The actual servers and games won't give you an infection. I've certainly never heard a case of this happening.

The best way to protect yourself is not to use dodgy copies of software, as it might well be infected with a rootkit, keylogger etc.

Then, just make sure that you secure your PC as a whole, by following the basics:

    • Using a hardware firewall
    • Using a good quality software internet security suite, such as Kaspersky
    • Fully patch your Windows with all the latest security updates
    • Use your common sense and minimize your PCs exposure to threats

    Hi:

There is no one set of "boilerplate", "cookbook" or standard steps.
    Each computer is unique.
    Each malware infection is unique.
Proper diagnosis, cleanup and repair depends on the particular infection and the system that is infected.
The process can be tedious and time-consuming, often requiring the use of multiple powerful tools, in the proper sequence.
Many of them can actually damage the system if deployed improperly by untrained computer users.

    Bottom line:
Malware cleanup is best done with *customized* support provided by trained individuals who know what tools to use and how to use them.

There are a few folks with such expertise here at this forum (I am not one of them).
And there are a number of reputable computer disinfection fora where trained malware removal experts provide free, custom assistance.

    Cheers,
