Windows 10: Windows Server version 2004 Now Available

Last week was exciting with //build. This week, the excitement continues with the general availability of Windows Server, version 2004 today.

Windows Server, version 2004 is a Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) Release. In our most recent Windows Server SAC releases, weâve optimized for containers. In this release, we continued improving fundamentals for the core container platform such as performance and reliability. Weâve also worked with .NET team and PowerShell team and further optimized image size and performance for Server Core containers. We will share more details below. On container networking side, we implemented several improvements to allow for better scalability, robustness, and reliability. One example is additional changes and improvements to Direct Server Return (DSR).

Hereâs how you can pull the new Windows Server, version 2004 base OS container images from MCR:

The Server Core container image is one of four Windows Base OS Images. Itâs designed for maximum application compatibility so customers can modernize their traditional Windows Server applications. The majority of those apps are ASP.NET-based web apps. In Windows Server, version 2004, the Server Core container image no longer optimizes the .NET Framework for performance, which saves a lot of space. Instead, .NET Framework optimization (aka âNGENâ&#157 is done in the higher-level .NET Framework runtime image.

The following table gives a quick overview of the image size reduction of Server Core container images among the three recent SAC releases. The Download size (or âCompressed â&#157 numbers were captured when running âdocker pullâ and Size on disk (or âUncompressed sizeâ&#157 numbers were captured when running âdocker images.â All values in this table are based on the latest images available today, including the RTM and monthly updates bits. In this case, the table reflects the May, 2020 monthly security updates, or the so called â5Bâ updates. For more information about Windows Container updates, see Update Windows Server containers.

.NET Framework container images are also smaller. .NET Framework NGEN optimization in containers is now more targeted to ASP.NET applications and Windows PowerShell scripts. In addition, the change to optimizing assemblies in the .NET Framework Runtime image (and not the Server Core base image) led to technical benefits that also enabled us to reduce container size. In conversations with customers, we understand that Windows containers have provided a bright path forward to modernize traditional Server apps and leverage Kubernetes and other cutting-edge technologies. However, we also hear that the size of Windows containers, especially Server Core containers, is large enough to impact the time to download and decompress locally. Weâve heard your feedback, which is why we looked closely at multiple ways to optimize. This release is yet another leap forward for customers looking at scaling applications in production, CI/CD, and any other workflow that benefits from faster startup or pulls un-cached images. .

Windows 10 SDK for Windows 10 version 2004 build 19041 now available

The Windows 10 SDK for Windows 10, version 2004 is now available with a go-live license. Build 19041, also known as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, is now in the Release Preview Windows Insider ring.

New APIs and Features for developers

Every Windows 10 update is loaded with new APIs, but don’t worry, Windows Dev Center has a full list of what is new for developers.
In addition to the new APIs, check out these updates to the app model, MSIX and WSL.

Windows Subsystem for Linux: The Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 is the latest and greatest version of WSL. It has significantly faster file IO performance (up to 20x faster) with full system call compatibility, meaning you can run more of the Linux apps you love (like Docker).

Hosted App Model: Applications can now declare themselves as a host for other applications via the new HostRuntime extension. These hosted apps look and behave like independent apps and can have deep Windows integration, even though they get their main executable from the host app. This technology powers PWAs on Microsoft Edge. Sparse Signed Packages: Applications can now include a signed MSIX package in their existing installers and have their installers register it. This allows applications to keep their existing installers but still assign themselves identities. An identity makes the app known to Windows and allows for a more deeply integrated experience by enabling the app to call Windows APIs that require identities such as Tiles, Toasts, Notifications and BackgroundTasks. Update your dev environment in two simple steps today

The first step in updating your dev environment is to update your system to the Windows 10, version 2004 (by using the Release Preview Ring). The Insider team has a great blog post that will walk you through how to get on the Release Preview Ring.

Then, go into Visual Studio 2017 or 2019 and grab the new SDK, and you’ll be good to go. Once version 2004 goes to general availability in May, the SDK will become the default SDK inside Visual Studio.

Today, with Windows Insider Release Preview for Windows 10, version 2004 Update:

Run the installer or go to Download Visual Studio 2019 for Windows & Mac and download it.

Go to “Individual Components.”

Go to “SDKs, libraries, and frameworks” section.

Check “Windows 10 SDK (10.0.19041).”

Click “Install.”

When the Windows 10, version 2004 goes to general availability:

Run the Visual Studio installer, or go to Download Visual Studio 2019 for Windows & Mac and download it.

Select “Universal Windows Platform development” under Workloads — Windows 10 SDK (10.0.19041) will be included by default.

Click “Install.”

Which workload should I choose?

Do you want tools for C++ desktop or game development for UWP? Be sure one of these two are selected:

C++ Universal Windows Platform tools in the UWP Workload section

Desktop development with C++ Workload and the Windows SDK 10 (10.0.19041)

If you want the Universal Windows Platform tools, Select the Universal Windows Platform tools workload.

Once your systems are updated and recompiled and your app is tested, submit your app to Dev Center.
