Windows 10: Windows Settings continuously displays "Updates in progress"

Hi,


System is Windows 10 Pro 2004 x64.


The issue is that whenever I open Settings, the Windows Update indicator at the top shows a yellow exclamation mark and "Updates in progress". If I click on the indicator I'm taken to the Windows Update page. Whether I check for updates or just return straightaway to the Setting home page, the indicator shows a green arrow and a "last checked" time, which appears to be correct.


If I then close Settings and immediately reopen it, the indicator is still correct. If I wait five minutes, I get the "Updates in progress" indicator again.


So far as I can tell, Windows Update is working properly. The system appears to be running normally and the Application and System event logs are as clean as can be expected. Things I've tried without success include:

• Windows Update Troubleshooter
• Stopping the BITS and Windows Update services, clearing out the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarting the services
• Removing some updates and letting Windows Update reinstall them
• An in-place OS upgrade

An Internet search hasn't done any good. Can the MS community help?

For us to properly isolate the error message "0x800704DE: continue with work in progress" that you are getting, we would like to know the following:

• Does this only happen to a certain folder/file? Or are all your folders/files affected?
• To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
• Send us a screenshot of the error message so we can see all the details?

There is a possibility that the zip file is corrupted. We suggest that you try obtaining another copy or try using a different program to open it, and check if the issue still persists.

Display settings

Hi Julia,



To reset the settings back to default, follow these steps:

• Go to your desktop, right click and select Display Settings.
• Choose the appropriate settings from the options under Display.

Let us know if the above steps resolved the issue.
