Windows 10: Windows Settings Crashes upon startup, Cortana/Search bar will not respond when clicking on...

Yesterday I noticed my computer would keep waking itself up from sleep mode without me touching it, I kept putting it back to sleep only for it to awaken again. So I shut off completely. Went to work and came back, turned on the PC and it said I had finished installing an update. Ok, now I open the computer and suddenly my search bar bottom left does not react to me clicking on it at all. I tried to check settings to see what was up, but settings will start then immediately crash. I've tried multiple ways of entering settings only for it to continue behaving the same way.


I've restarted the computer multiple times, with no apparent change.

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.

Its possible that the Windows Search service isn't running. To make sure that the service is running, follow these steps:

• Press Windows key on your keyboard and then on the Cortana search box, type and click
  Services from the result.
• On the list, look for Windows Search, then right click and then choose
  Properties.
• Make sure that the Startup type is set to Automatic.
• Restart your device and see if the issue is resolved.

This issue might occur if there is change in Cortana settings.



I suggest you to follow the steps below to disable and re-enable Cortana settings in the computer.

• • Sign in the computer.
  • Then click on Search bar.
  • In the search box at the bottom, type Cortana & Search settings in the search bar and click on it.
  • Then try to disable Cortana from Windows 10.
  • To re-enable Cortana, you can click inside the Cortana search bar.
  • From the bottom of the left section of the Cortana pane, click the Cortana icon.
