  1. Windows so broken I couldn't even do a clean install to fix the initial issue

It all started soon after I got Doom Eternal and Fallout 76 on the XBox Store. I installed them on an external hard drive and they worked fine for the first few playing sessions. Then one day, I was able to run Fallout 76 (through that annoying trick of every time having to copy a config file to the games folder) but not play it because it hadn't automatically downloaded the latest update. The Xbox app gave me no option to do so, and to my surprise, Doom Eternal wasn't running either. I looked at that option of defining where new apps were installed and it didn't work. Assuming it was simply a problem with that single app, I uninstalled it. And then it became impossible to reinstall it. Windows Store has that problem of me clicking the install button and nothing happening. Repairing and resetting shows the black check mark, but no effect. The WSreset command just opens and stays there for hours with no effect either. At this point not even the games installed on C: through the Xbox app were working, although ironically Fallout 76 still ran, unable to join a server due to being in that outdated limbo. Tired of useless solutions, I went to the supposed end of the chain and went for a clean install.

It all run as it should until about 94% of the process, when in the restart after that I'm slapped in the face with a problem notification, and a notice that the install will revert to its initial state. When Windows finally boots again, I get a tab telling me about error 0x8007042B - 0x4001E " The Installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation". At this point I have no idea what to do beyond a full reboot of the system. I've had this laptop only since August so I don't have that many files to back up, but reinstalling all the software once again is a PITA I would much rather avoid if possible. What are my options here? Thanks in advance.

  2. Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:
    • Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
    • When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
    • Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
    • When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
    • This time enter your product key
    • When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
    • Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it
Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

  4. Windows so broken I couldn't even do a clean install to fix the initial issue

    Windows 10 clean install issues

I have the well known to the webs 'Start Menu Not working / Slow opening apps from taskbar' like you in RS3 aka Fall Creators update,
Even after CLEAN windows install...and there is no permanent fix out there, until M$ fix it.
So i have clean install RS2 Iso and block the updates so RS3 dont install to my system.
Im waiting for RS4 to be released hopefully fixes all those issues...but i doubt, they only thing they do is adding more and more bloatware.
