  1. Windows Start Menu Hangs....

Ok, so when I update to the Fall Creators update as long as I leave the Fast Startup option on I’m fine. However, if I turn it off or restart the computer even with fast startup on the login screen hangs up and then unless I do a series of right and left clicks on the start menu it won’t open. Then when I get it to open it takes a while to respond. Again as long as I leave fast start up on and don’t restart my pc it’s as if nothing is wrong.

I’ve installed the update twice now with the same result. If this a bug or should I install a different way other than through windows update?

    :)

  2. Start Menu Hang

    Hi,

The issue you're experiencing might be due to a variety of reasons.

That being said, please provide the answers to the following for us to be able to learn more about your concern:

    • Is your Windows 10 updated?
    • What were the recent changes made before the issue started?

In the meantime, you can check this link for steps in troubleshooting problems with
    your Start menu.

To make sure that you're not experiencing an account specific issue, kindly
    create another administrator account
    and observe if the
    issue will still be present.

Let's observe if the same issue will persist when your PC is in Safe Mode. Starting your PC in
Safe Mode can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC while using a limited set of files and drivers. Here's how to set your PC in
    Safe Mode:

    • Press the Windows + I key from the keyboard to launch
      Settings.
    • Select Update & Security, then Recovery.
    • Click the Restart now button under Advanced startup.
    • Select Troubleshoot when you get into the Choose an option screen.
    • Select Advanced options, then Startup Settings.
    • Click Restart.
    • Select 4 or press the F4 key from the keyboard after your PC restarts to start your PC now in
      Safe Mode.

    Update us on the result.

    Regards.

I got that too,. And I tried everything over two days trying to fix it with many reinstalls to no avail. I am back at the CU version that I had backed up.

With me it worked fine in safe mode. But I pared the starting CU down to about nothing special (replaced Samsung NVME drivers with MS NVME drivers, etc. and still the same results after the upgrade.

    What is your system spec?

  6. I’ve got an i7 processor and 32 GB ram. If you want more details let me know but I also had to revert back to the CU version and defer the update. Right now it is deferred for 100 days.

I never tried safe mode as I felt this was a bug.

If the issue resolves within Safe Mode then problem could be cause by startup program or third party service.

  9. 7th gen on processor, no idea on motherboard but chipset is intel.

The thing with safe mode is Id have to reinstall the update again and I don’t have time for that as I use my PC for quite a lot.

It isn't that I think. I stripped my CU system pretty much bare (except for photoshop and other no-startup items) and it still had the dame issue. I can elaborate on the issues I had (maybe they are related).

    1. After the update, my EFI system partition was assigned a drive letter. This was visible in My Computer and diskpart but not disk management . If I unassigned it via diskpart, it would show up the next reboot. I had to use partitionmagic to get rid of it. I don't know if this wwas related to the start menu hang.
    2. When the start menu hung, I could often log out and log back in and it would work until the next reboot.
    3. It was not just start menu, but Cortana and Edge. I could start up firefox and thunderbird fine.
    4. It didn't make a difference whether fast startup was enabled or not.
    5. I would see apparently related errors in the system log: The program ShellExperienceHost.exe version 10.0.16299.15 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
    6. When I restarted, I would get the prompt "Task Host is stopping background tasks (Microsoft \ Windows \ Plug and Play \ Device Install Reboot Required". This even though all devices had been detected and their driver version checked for updates.

I tried paring everything down to generic Microsoft drivers and no startup third-party items and redoing the upgrade. That is tiring, didn't pay off.
After the upgrade I made a backup of it and used it to try uninstalling practically everything and different setting (e.g. fast boot). I actually got it to exhibit this behavior every other boot this way.

  12. I got the same thing with number 6. I think there is an obvious issue with the update.

  14. Does the Cortana worked?

Please open the Command Prompt as a administrator and type following commands one at time:

    Code: Sfc / Scannow Dism /Online /cleanup-image /restorehealth[/quote]

I made an account on this forum just to say I have the EXACT same symptoms every single one. Frustrating as hell. I am wondering if it's a driver issue but the fact that we keep getting a Z drive makes me think it is something else.
