Windows 10: Windows Start Menu Recommended items from Teams will only open in Web App

At my work, i have many files in teams, these files when opened from the start menu recommended items will only open in the Web App. i do not want to use the web app, i want to use my excel program. The issue is not my defaults as they are all set to open the desktop application, the issue seems to be that because they are in teams, they are essentially sharepoint files and will only open in the web app. if i open excel and go to the Open menu, i can then access these in the program itself, however these are extra steps that were not in Windows 10 and render the "recommended" items counter

Recommended section in the start menu is blank

I believe you should see recommended apps, recently used files, etc. Let's try some steps to address this problem:

1. Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I.

2. Navigate to Personalization on the left, and then select Start on the right.

3. Under Layout, choose More pins to reduce the size of the Recommended section.

4. Disable Show recently added apps.

5. Disable Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer. This will clear your recent items list and halt the display of recently opened items in Jump Lists and File Explorer > Home > Recent.

6. Turn off Show websites from your browsing history.

7. Turn off Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more.

This will clear the Recommended section in your Start menu. After you do this, restart your computer, and follow the steps again to enable everything again.

 

Add or Remove Items for All Apps in Start menu in Windows 10

My caffeine titer is low, so I must be missing some blatant, basic step to add a shortcut to my account's All Apps list in the Start menu (Option1).
The new process both for creating shortcuts and for adding/removing items to the Win10 start menu has me flummoxed.
Your tutorials are always "topnotch", so this must be a cockpit error on my part.

I have d/l the wushowhide.diagcab and saved it to my downloads folder.
I have done Step 1 on Page 1 of THIS tutorial to navigate to the Start Menu Programs folder.
But HOW do I actually complete Step 3 to create a shortcut and then add it to the Start Menu "All Apps"??

I think I need to first somehow create a shortcut for the .cab file and then add it to All Apps in the start menu???

Please advise.

P.S. I have been postponing the probably inevitable installation of Class Shell.
I would rather not have to install a 3rd-party program to be able to perform basic Windows tasks.
But this new workflow in Win10 for a basic functionality might force me to do it.
Sigh.

 

Problem pinning apps to the start menu


Not sure if this will help.

To add an item to the Start list, simply drag it into the Start list area. You can do this from within the Start menu of course, but you can also drag an item from the desktop or a File Explorer window: Just drag it onto the Start button first, and after the Start menu has opened you can drag it from there into the Start list.

What can you add to the Start list? Virtually anything. Documents and other files. Any folder. Desktop application, Modern app, or web app shortcuts.

You can also reorder the items in the Start list using drag-and-drop.
