Windows 10: Windows start menu...

This one puzzles me and have idea how and why it changed. The display did work most of the day as usual and there had been no changes made to the system that I am aware of....

Left-clicking on the Windows icon in the left bottom corner used to bring up the list of applications, with the most recent ones on the top. For some reason, starting today, doing the same minimizes all of the open applications on the desktop, the background dimmed out similarly to entering the admin password and shows this:





The image above shortened from the 1,200 pixel high...

Once this display is in place, the desktop icons not shown and the desktop is not responding. Clicking on the Windows icon again, or on any of the taskbar icons, brings back the desktop and its icons.

Clicking on the top hamburger icon shows this:





Clicking on the hamburger icon again just closes the extended image down to the narrow image above.

Clicking on the "Pinned tiles" does nothing...

Clicking on the "All apps" links spreads all of the application icons in the middle of the screen, from the top to bottom, five column wide, while maintaining the dimmed background image. It's kind of interesting look...

The display is very similar to how Windows 8.1 used to display the installed application via the Windows key on the keyboard. As the matter of fact, pressing the Windows key has the same effect as clicking on the Windows icon.

Right clicking on the Windows icon looks the same:





Anyone has any idea what caused this change and how to restore the list of applications to above the Windows icon?

My start menu icons aren't showing up properly!

I have same problem, the start menu is not working. when you click it , nothing happened. Microsoft edge and store icon are missing on the taskbar.

the start menu on my desktop is not working. And some of my downloaded Windows Apps also is not working (Spotify, Skype, Messenger etc.)

How to fix it?

 

Open Settings > Personalisation > Start

turn on 'Show apps list in Start menu'

You may have accidentally turned it off.

If it's not that, you may have accidentally turned on 'Use Start full screen' in that same settings page.

Tried to toggle it off/on couple of times, but no change...

 

The reason turn out to be, that the" Personalisation > Start > Use Start full screen" had to be toggled off. I still have no clue why it changed today....

Yes, that was my second suggestion in my post #2.

Probably an accidental click, easily done - especially on a touchpad, Were you looking at that settings page recently?

No touchpad, two 24" monitor and did not even open the personalization today. Well, until your tip that is...
