Microsoft Forcing Hello PIN after Passwordless Setup. How to disable?

Hi Emily, so this method didn't work. My assumption is still that the passwordless configuration in Microsoft at the account level hasn't trickled down to options at the Windows sign on level. I created a PIN and restarted. After restarting this made the toggle available for the Windows Hello option which was already toggled off because that's how I used to have it set. I toggled it on, restarted, and toggled it off, restarted with no change.

With a PIN created I can now select "forgot my PIN" which takes me through the passwordless phone authorization prompt but now I am met with a box to change my PIN that I have to dismiss. On top of that there isn't any way to remove the PIN (that option is greyed out) so now my account is less secure than it was because I have a PIN I can't disable that someone could potentially guess/extract which is exactly why I was trying to move away from passwords to begin with.

It feels like there's a gap in Microsoft's passwordless setup. If passwordless logins are the most secure option available as seems to be the opinion of the tech companies then I shouldn't be required to essentially setup a local password at all and it should just leverage the much more secure phone prompt.

I would love to go back to not having a PIN if you have any suggestions for that as I just want the phone prompt. Currently I have Windows Hello disabled and still no way to remove the PIN.

Microsoft Forcing Hello PIN after Passwordless Setup. How to disable?

I enabled passwordless login on my Microsoft account. Without any notice Microsoft then wiped out the local password setup on my PC and forces authentication from my phone. I actually prefer this but wasn't expecting the change to impact local PC logon behavior. The problem is now that this has somehow enabled Windows Hello so every time I authorize the login I'm prompted to setup a PIN and my only options are to do that or close the window.

When I go to account settings on my PC the ability to toggle "For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device" is greyed out. The language on the PIN setup window is that I'm "required" to setup a PIN. I'm not running the business editions of Windows so I'm not sure how it enabled this "requirement" simply by changing the settings on my Microsoft account.

I could obviously setup a PIN, but at that point we'd be back to having a local PW for the PC which is what Microsoft had just wiped out and seems to defeat the purpose of passwordless logins. I just want it to stop asking me to setup a PIN every time I log in. I've searched other community posts about this but none of them involve having set up passwordless logins at the Microsoft account level and it appears the fixes from those posts are not applicable here. Seems like this is maybe a newer issue with the introduction of this account feature.

  4. Windows still forcing PIN after Passwordless Setup. How to disable?

If I disable Windows Hello Pin while the only other method setup is a Yubikey, what happens?

So as the title, suggests, if I have a security key and a Windows pin setup, and I disable the pin, does it force me to only be able to login with my security key? Or go through forgot password of course, since I enabled passwordless account in my settings?
