Windows 10: Windows stops working on reboot after clean install on specific drive

Hey there,


My computer stopped working suddenly on Friday (9 September 2018). It always got stuck on booting and directed me to the system repair/recovery menu right after the windows logo was displayed.


The weird is, this happens after a clean install. A drive from a different computer just works fine with this computer. Also, the drive from the not working computer is working in other computers. So, no hardware or drive problems.


Also in repair mode, the command prompt shows "0 installations detected" after typing "bootrec /scanos". This happens right after rebooting on a clean installation.


I don't know what it is. Probably windows updates destroyed something, I don't know.

Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:

• Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
• When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
• Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
• When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
• This time enter your product key
• When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
• Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it

Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive and make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Windows Vista Clean Installation

To do a clean install on a fresh hard drive with Vista on an upgrade disc, you have to follow certain steps. Buying a full install CD would've been easier, but using the upgrade disc only adds more time, so it's not that big of a deal.
