Windows 10: Windows Store Crashes Without Media Feature Pack on Win 10 (N Edition) Why?

I recently updated my brother's laptop from Windows 10 (Pro N Edition) from build 1703 to 1803. After the update I noticed a couple of programs started to crash on startup some which are as follows:

1. Windows Store
2. Groove Music (store app)
3. Fifa 17
4. KWorld UB490-A (USB TV Stick)
5. Some others I can't recall right now...

My question is why is this not documented anywhere. I have read allot of threads on this forum where people are complaining about store app crashing on startup and none of the technicians bothered to ask the complainant if he or she is using N Edition of Windows 10.


Cmon guys!! get it together. Please document this somewhere so that consumers are aware of the consequences of not installing Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N Edition.


BTW why do we have to Install this Media Feature Pack again after upgrading to new (N Edition) build. Why are you making this Windows harder and harder to use. I am an advance user so I am able to troubleshoot these sort of nasty undocumented bugs but an average user cannot. If possible I would suggest to Include Media Feature Pack as part of the future N Edition builds and while you are at it please also include "Connect" app. Its not fair to exclude the "Connect" app from N Edition builds.


Addition Info

After installing Media Feature Pack and confirming the affected programs are working, I out of curiosity disabled Windows Media Player from "Programs and Features" and found out that the affected programs kept working that means the Media Feature Pack in addition to Windows Media Player installs some media related assemblies/libraries (probably in System32 folder) and it seems it is these assemblies/libraries that the affected programs depend on to work properly.


I was also able to replicate this issue on a windows 10 (N Edition) virtual machine.

Win10 N Will not install Media pack

I am using windows 10N Insider preview and The media pack will not install. I have tried the following:

• Media Feature Pack list for Windows N editions
• Media Feature Pack for N and KN editions of Windows 10 Version 1508 - KB3010081
• Media Feature Pack for N and KN editions of Windows 10 Version 1511 - KB3010081
• Media Feature Pack for N editions of Windows 10 Version 1607 - KB3133719
• Media Feature Pack for N edition of Windows 10 Version 1703 - KB4016817
• Media Feature Pack for N edition of Windows 10 Version 1709 - KB4039813

The only one to install was the very first one. However Media player is not installed, there are no media player folders. I can add the app.

Every other version say the update is not applicable to your system. Not sure how
that's even possible. I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times and nothing. No media player. Should I just assume that it does not work and will never be fixed or is there some magic that I
don't know about to get this thing working and installed correctly?

Windows 10 Home - Media Feature Pack

Hi Adam,

There is a big possibility that the version of the Media Feature Pack
that you're downloading is not compatible with the current version of your Windows. Let's try to check first your Windows version. See the steps below on how to do so:

• Press Windows key, then type in winver.
• A pop-up box will show up containing your Windows version.
• Send us a screenshot.

In the meantime, here are the Media Feature Pack for different Windows version:

• Media Feature Pack for N edition of Windows 10 Version 1703 (April 2017).
• Media Feature Pack for N editions of Windows 10 Version 1607.
