Windows 10: Windows Store won't open after update this morning

Cool, thanks for sharing that info. At least MS are aware and admitted it. Often they stay quiet and pretend problems don't exist

 

That is why when I came across it
I thought every member should know that they are aware of issues and trying to fix them

 

If system restore works, that's all that matters.

Promises ? Don't believe it until you see them.

I have been pulling my hair out trying all sorts of fixes and then found out I am not the only one.
Hopefully we have a fix coming soon.

 

Presumably if someone encounters this problem and
a. have no relevant /usable restore points
b. have not yet learnt to use disk imaging or have no relevant image

then an in-place upgrade repair install (See Tutorial) would fix this and be the only remaining option?

Am I correct in thinking that if you don't do manual updates with the store open, this problem won't arise?

 

Unfortunately, I cannot confirm the avoidance of manual store update with it open will prevent the problem. However, this is what broke mine (and only on my user account), it could of been a co incidence but it's the conclusion I am reaching that keeping auto updates on is the safest thing. Don't fancy trying to recreate the issue. I just must stress to other users to avoid powershell fixes at all costs as that will make things worse. Restore points and images are very important.

Yep that's good advice. I think the auto route is the way to go. I only changed mine to manual because I didn't like the idea of a buggy update to an app going in. Wanted to research whether an app update caused an issue before committing. Unfortunately I have had my fingers burned before on iOS where sometimes app updates cripple the app because the developer has not bothered to QA test. Anyway auto is back on now and no problems since

I did not end up fixing it. tried everything under the sun. everything I try to do gives an error of some sort. I did not try restoring or reinstalling windows, yet *Wink

 

Options: (in order): System restore (if restore points on & available)... restore Disk Image (if you use this - and you need to!) ........... In place upgrade repair install (See Tutorials).... Reset\Clean install....Win 8.1.. Linux *chuckle.... ipad

 

yeah the problem with small HD on my laptop.

What disk image program do you recommend. thank you.

 

Hi, good question.. disk imaging is so valuable for preserving your system, your sanity, letting you sleep at night and saving you time in recovery without seeking technical assistance (which may not always help!).

Also allows you to replace your disk/SSD relatively easily.

I've used Acronis TI, O&O disk image, Easeus ToDo Workstation, Aomei Backupper. I've briefly looked at Macrium Reflect.

Acronis TI was great- many years ago. Now it's bloated.

Presently I use Aomei Backupper, which for some years has been very reliable, but its error messages on elementary situations (e.g. storage medium not allocated expected drive letter) are useless. (Easy to avoid the problem though). So great so long as you know its minor quirks.

Support is quite responsive, although the English translation is comprehensible, but rather non-native at times.

Macrium Reflect is said to be the most dependable e.g. with SSD and GPT disk configurations. I'll be finding out how Aomei fares with this in a couple of weeks with my new laptop.

Considering the free versions of these two, Macrium free does not offer incremental imaging, Aomei does.
Macrium has a much more 'geeky' interface.

There's a range of other features one might consider, like combining incremental images, restoration to dissimilar hardware, etc etc - depends what's important to you.

Expect a disk image program to enable you to mount the image and extract files.

Speed? Image size? Much of a muchness.
