Overview

This document outlines the roadmap towards delivering Windows Terminal 2.0 by Spring 2021.

Milestones

The Windows Terminal project is engineered and delivered as a set of 4-week milestones. New features will go into Windows Terminal Preview first, then a month after they been in Preview, those features will move into Windows Terminal.

Issue Triage & Prioritization

Incoming issues/asks/etc. are triaged several times a week, labeled appropriately, and assigned to a milestone in priority order:

P0 (serious crashes, data loss, etc.) issues are scheduled to be dealt with ASAP

P1/2 issues/features/asks assigned to the current or future milestone, or to the Terminal 2.0 milestone for future assignment, if required to deliver a 2.0 feature

Issues/features/asks not on our list of 2.0 features are assigned to the Terminal Backlog for subsequent triage, prioritization & scheduling.

2.0 Scenarios

The following are a list of the key scenarios we're aiming to deliver for Terminal 2.0.

Note: There are many other features that don't fit within 2.0, but will be re-assessed and prioritized for 3.0, the plan for which will be published in 2021.

Spec: #2080 1 Clickable links Hyperlinking any links that appear in the text buffer. When clicking on the link, the link will open in your default browser.

Issue: #574 1 Default terminal If a command-line application is spawned, it should open in Windows Terminal (if installed) or your preferred terminal

Dependent on overall theming 2 Jump list Show profiles from task bar (on right click)/start menu.

Issue: #576 2 Open with multiple tabs A setting that allows Windows Terminal to launch with a specific tab configuration (not using only command line arguments).

Issue: #756 3 Open in Windows Terminal Functionality to right click on a file or folder and select Open in Windows Terminal.

Implementation: #6100 3 Session restoration Launch Windows Terminal and the previous session is restored with the proper tab and pane configuration and starting directories.

Issues: #961, #960, #766 3 Quake mode Provide a quick launch terminal that appears and disappears when a hotkey is pressed.

Issue: #653 3 Settings migration infrastructure Migrate people's settings without breaking them. Hand-in-hand with settings UI. 3 Pointer bindings Provide settings that can be bound to the mouse.

Windows Terminal Preview v0.9 for Windows 10 scheduled for Feb. 11

Terminal v0.9 is scheduled for 2/11

This is the last release that will have new features before the v1 release

Subsequent releases are strictly for bug fixes and polishing

Features include:

Examples:

wt -d . (opens a new Terminal in the current working directory)

wt -p "profile name" (opens a new Terminal with the given profile)

wt; new-tab -p "profile name"; split-pane -V -p "profile name" (demonstrated below)

Windows Terminal Release Candidate v0.11.1333.0 (1.0rc2) to Windows 10

Changes

Some of you reported that text would literally melt, so we added two new rendering options to help congeal your terminal experience (#5853)

You can use the following (global!) settings to control various aspects of our rendering engine:

experimental.rendering.software (boolean): when your graphics drivers won't stay in their lane, you can opt in for software rendering.

experimental.rendering.forceFullPaint (boolean): you can turn off the differential drawing optimization that we added--at the cost of speed, you can have full determinism.

We're now shipping the latest version of Cascadia Code (and Cascadia Mono), 2004.30 (#5867)

Bug Fixes

Terminal Competence

git log (and other paged applications) should now copy with their lines wrapped (#5771) (#5870)

We should no longer leave old search result highlights laying around for you to step on like a small plastic block toy in the dark (#5798)

CSI 2 J (the non-destructive "clear screen") will now correctly push the screen into the scrollback (#5683)

Rendering

Box and line drawing glyphs now appear at the right sizes (and actually connect with each other) (#5743)

This works in almost all fonts, but ones that do not actually have glyphs for that range will still have some unusual visual artifacting.

Hundreds of emoji should now appear to be the correct width (#5795)

A special exception was made for characters in WGL4, the old codepage 437 glyphs everybody knows and loves and also hates. They're still narrow.

Reliability

Dragging a selection while resizing the terminal is not a reasonable thing to do, but it was even less reasonable for us to crash when you did so. We now don't. (#5855)

We'll no longer crash when the clipboard gives us the classic "high five! too slow!" (#5856)

Terminal is now more robust in the face of you trying to close the same tab multiple times (#5742)

Closing a tab in fullscreen mode will no longer cause terminal to stop responding (#5809)

The New Microsoft 365 Roadmap is Live

Today our new Microsoft 365 Roadmap is live! We are excited to share this new version of our roadmap, that brings together Office 365, Enterprise Mobility + Security, and Windows 10 into one destination.

In addition to retaining all the current information and functionality of the existing Office 365 Roadmap, we’ve updated our site design to improve the user experience.

With the new Microsoft 365 Roadmap, you’ll be able to:

Utilize new search filters such as product, cloud instance, and platform.

View additional information for the features on the Roadmap, including whether the feature is deploying in Targeted Release, preview, specialized cloud instances, or worldwide. This information will be located on the feature card, or available via search in the Roadmap.

Leverage new RSS capabilities through a custom link on the Roadmap web page. Using the RSS features feed you can subscribe to be notified of real-time feature updates, and view the notification in Outlook, supported browsers or mobile readers. Power users can use various tools to automate the handling of RSS updates to integrate them into their own 3rd party services.

Other notable changes:

The existing Office 365 URL (https://products.office.com/business/office-365-roadmap) will be replaced with a new Microsoft 365 Roadmap URL (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap). The existing Office 365 Roadmap URL will automatically redirect to the new page.

The "previously released" category will become the “launched” category. Launched features will remain in the “launched” category for six months after going live.

We have redirects in place so that the deep links in any existing Message Center posts will continue to function, and any bookmarks you have set to the Roadmap will continue to work.
