Windows 10: windows Terminal fails to run

I have a brand new laptop, and upgraded from Windows 10 to 11, I believe running in S mode. Windows Terminal powers up with sentence [error 0x800711c7 when launching 'powershell.exe']. If I try to launch the terminal from right clicking on desktop, it takes me to a Window about removing S mode. Do I need to do this, as it is a one-way option, and why? Thanks for your help!

Failure to run Windows terminal as Administrator

Hello and Merry Christmas!

I have standard user account on my system that I use for work, onto which I installed Windows terminal.
Issue is I need to start terminal as Administrator, and when I do it I get following:





It starts fine to start it as normal (standard user).
To attempt to resolve this problem I logged into my Administrator account and installed Windows terminal there, and it works to start it in Administrator account.

Then I tried again to start it in standard user account but I got the same error message box.
Do you have any suggestions or solutions on how to solve this problem?

Btw. here is how I start the terminal:
I pinned it to start menu and then right click -> more -> run as Administrator:

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

 

BackgroundTaskHost.exe and others – Terminated but running

Hope someone recognises this. Symptoms are:

Looking at Resource Monitor

• There are several – seen up to 10 – copies of BackgroundTaskHost.exe sitting at the head of the CPU activity overview. Each is grey’ed out with a status of Terminated, yet they are apparently consuming about 10 in the CPU column each with 14 threads –
  at least that’s my reading of the Overview. Nothing else doing much going on.
• CPU is running at 114% maximum clock speed
• Unsurprisingly, the computer’s fans are running flat out getting rid of the heat.
• Computer has got no power left to do anything useful

Actually, on this machine there are quite a few occurrences of Terminated processes hanging around on the list – that’s quite different from the other machines in the house. For example: Word sat there as Terminated for nearly a minute after I closed this.

Processor is AMD based: Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H. That’s a 6-core setup – Phenom II apparently. 2010 vintage.

Virus package is Kaspersky KAV2015 and its up to date app and data

Our other two machines (HP laptops of different vintages) are all OK and downloaded via windows update correctly

One further thing possibly relevant. Whilst the two laptops loaded OK via windows update, this AMD machine was failing every time (including all the well-publicised work arounds) so had to be loaded from .ISO, but it went OK. There was a corruption in Outlook,
but a sfc /scannow seemed to have dealt with that as posted elsewhere.

I’ve run another sfc /scannow and all is well on that front.

Ideas needed please!
