Windows 10: Windows thinks I am not connected but I am

Windows 10 problems – network awareness and Win 10 apps. not working on Wi-Fi or Wired (CAT5e).

1. Network and Sharing Center shows “you are currently not connected to any networks.”
> Even though I connected using either wireless or wired connections.
> Checked workgroup= OK and can print to network printer so LAN is working on wi-fi or wired.

2. Wi-Fi works BUT hovering over icon says, “Identifying…Internet Access.
> When wifi network list is opened it shows my SSID as Connected but network and sharing says same as #1 above.

3. Cannot add user account to computer. Gives message: “Something Went Wrong!”.

4. Search is limited to computer only – “We can’t connect to the internet right now. But you can still search your stuff.” Win 10 does search the laptop and provide results. If searching by Bing, default browser, Chrome, opens and gets to the internet okay.

5. Edge does not connect to internet.
> Firefox and Chrome connects without delay.
> Outlook connects and email accounts work okay.

6. Cortana does not work. Gives message that cannot search internet now. Make sure you are connected to the internet (even though laptop is connected).

Conclusion: Windows 10 has lost accurate network connection awareness and this prohibits parts of Windows (Edge, Cortana, Search), Add user account and other internals from working properly due to dependency on internet access.

In other words, all Windows MODERN apps. (Mail, News, Money, Calendar, Search, Edge, Cortana, etc.) are not working due to being told there is no internet connection. WiFi list shows SSID as Connected and I have full internet access.

Non-Windows Modern apps. like Firefox and Chrome work fine. Outlook also works fine.

I have tried many things but would like to hear from you with possible solutions beyond basics (clean install not an option). Thanks in advance for any assistance you might offer.

Windows WiFi menu thinks I'm not connected but I AM!

Since doing windows updates (I also updated my network drivers) windows thinks i'm not connected to internet but I am.

I disconnected my actual Ethernet cable just to confirm and I am connecting automatically on start up. But on the menu screen that comes up from lower right corner (the one that shows networks available) it show "No internet, secured".

If I go to Settings->Network & Internet, that screen, under Network Status shows: NOT CONNECTED You aren't connected to any networks.

I have a wifi dongle that I use which has a utility program which also shows nearby networks. That shows me not connected as well. But here I am posting, a question. At least with that utility, I can click on my network and click connect and it connects
and stays connected. With the menu, it will only show me connected for a few seconds and then goes back to "No Internet".

Many programs, including windows updates, use the faulty reading and stop trying to work because they think I am not connected.

What can I do?

Under Broadcam network adapter, it does not have an option "Roll Back Driver".

 

I am having the same exact issue.. It seems to happen when my computer goes to sleep.

Now that I upgraded to Win 7 Pro using the Custom Installation method (rolls up prior version to windows.old folder) my network status is correct and proper. Network and Sharing sees and reports I am connected. Everything works properly except that Windows Updates does not work - it just scans for updates forever and is hard to close that window.

When I go to Windows Update now it shows a large red X inside an official looking shield shape. No error message or any other useful information on the page. No way to know what the problem might be without knowing the error that caused the Update page to have this permanent red X on it.

The CPU and Memory gadgets slowly creeps up to 80-100% for CPU and 80+% for memory usage and stays there. Task Manager shows that "SVCHOST" is taking up 50-80% or more of CPU cycles and most of memory. Tracking down what that particular service host process is working and found WINDOWS UPDATE is the culprit.

If I Stop the Windows Update service the meters show everything going back to normal when idle: CPU = 2-6% and Memory = 24%. I cannot get updates and cannot leave that service running constantly.

So far I have tried at least 20 different tools and methods and the problem remains. I suspect either a Security patch OR one of the many .NET updates is the real cause of the problem now.

My next attempt will likely be: buy Win 7 Pro Full Retail version, format the disk and do a clean install. If the problem returns after updates my suspicion would be confirmed.

I now am pretty sure it is not hardware related. Formatting the drive and a clean install would likely be my last ditch effort to resolve this. Makes me start looking at Apple laptop as I have been sick of MS update problems for several years.

I was able to fix mine by just restarting the services that crashed but that's not a permanent fix if it keeps happening.
If you're looking for a temporary fix try this.

Open Run or Cortana search
type services.msc
make sure dns client and Network Location Awareness are running.
If not, then start them.

 

Thanks for the suggestion. Did those already and didn't help. Another MS MVP poster advised me to let the update scan run for up to 24 hours. He says this is happening a lot of late (hello MS!) and it should eventually get updates and after that should return to normal. What have I got to lose, eh? Good luck with yours. Here goes nothing...
