  1. Windows Thumbnail Question

Hello, I am brand new to Windows 10 after being on Windows XP for for almost 15 years (my computer finally died). On XP, I was able to have one image file as the thumbnail for the file (example below...not mine):

On 10, I/we have this "flipped through" file folder that, to me anyway, just looks goofy (see below).

I was wondering if there a way to change the files to a one image thumbnail look from XP or am I just stuck with what I've got?

    :)

Directories with HEVC/x265 or Hi10p/10bit video sluggish

    Hi James,

I suspect you are experiencing this because File Explorer is trying to create the thumbnails of the videos. If you do NOT want thumbnails created follow this instructions:

    Windows 10 Handling of Thumbs.db

The above will remove thumbnails for pictures and videos. If you do want thumbnails then I suggest not having so many files in a single folder. Let me know if this answers your question.

    Two questions

I get thumbnails automatically for my videos, don't need to to anything. However, these are from more or less the beginning of the video. No channce of selecting a thumbnail myself. Maybe that was your question?

What you are seeing with the "flipped through" on Win10 are actually subFolders in the main Pictures Folder. On my computers I have to open each one of those subFolders and use Large Icons for the View.

  5. So, there isn't a way to have just one icon on the main folder?

Should be able to right-click over the folder you want to customize, click on "properties", click the "customize" tab and then click the "change icon" button in the "folder icons" subsection located near the bottom of the folder properties window...

  7. It, unfortunately, doesn't give me the option of one "flat" XP-esque file. The only one in the "folder icons" subsection that will allow thumbnails is the "flipped through" file. I was hoping there was another way.

Odd, unless that's one of the differences between versions... I'm using W10 Pro, what version are you using?

  9. Windows 10 Home. I will admit, though, I am still new to 10, so I could be missing something obvious. 15 years with XP to 10 takes some getting used to. *Biggrin

If you want the entire folder to look like an icon, you need to use an .ico (icon) file for the representation. (It's best to keep the ico in the respective folders, lots of work though!)
