Windows 10: Windows transfer to new motherboard

    Windows transfer to new motherboard


    I recently upgraded my motherboard as it was a good deal during black friday/cyber monday sales. I'm trying to use my product key that I've been using for my past 3 computers now, but currently it doesn't work and said my product key is not valid. My product key is a OEM key and I think digital, this is my product key that came with my pc from way back in 2014. So, I'm not sure why it's not letting my activate my windows.

    Reactivating Windows 10 with new motherboard

    Plugging it into the new motherboard should be enough, but create a recovery drive in case you need to perform a startup repair:


    The fact that you don't have a license key concerns me. If Windows 10 came preinstalled on your computer, you can't transfer it to a new computer or motherboard. You will need to purchase an entirely new license.

    transfer windows 10 to new pc?

    It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

    If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    Transfer ssd with windows 10 to a new motherboard

    It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

    If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

    Your system might not boot, so, I recommend you have reinstall media ready, which you can use to perform a startup repair:
