Windows 10: Windows "Type Here To Search" Bar Grey Box

When I try to search for an application or file in my computer, a grey box shows up and blocks the content. It disappears when you click on it. This concerns me as I have recently also noticed that my search engine on google sometimes randomly switches to yahoo. Is it possible that my computer has been infected by malware? I have used Microsoft defenders fullscan and Offline scan but have not yielded any results.

• 
  Right click on the task bar.
  
• 
  Go to Cortana.
  
• 
  Click on show search box.
  

Now check if you are able to find search box.

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.

If you meant the Cortana search bar, review the suggested solutions on these threads:
