Windows 10: Windows update broke camera and bluetooth - how to fix?

After the last Windows update, my PC cannot detect either the built-in webcam or any bluetooth functions. I have already reset the PC twice and would prefer not to have to do it again just to get basic functions working.



The issue: camera cannot be detected, bluetooth cannot be detected


What I have tried:


Windows is fully up to date with all optional updates, and drivers are fully up to date according to both windows and manufacturer sites.


In device manager, these two devices do not appear normally and only appear when I hit "show hidden devices". I Tried uninstalling the camera and scanning for hardware, it did not reappear. Restart did not make it reappear either.


Tried rolling back updates with advanced restart, but was unable to do so. Windows will not allow me to uninstall the update that is causing the problem.


After previously resetting, camera and bluetooth worked so this is not a hardware issue, it is a windows issue. I tried turning off updates for the longest period possible, but apparently windows ignored that completely and re-updated to the broken version against my will so I'm stuck here.


It isn't worth having to reset my PC every week to fix this issue, but I haven't even been able to find someone with the same problem online, let alone fix it.



Anyone know what's going on or how to get things working again?

After a random update from Windows to update my Edge browser. I completely lost my Bluetooth, my computer seemed convinced that it wasn't even compatible. I spent many hours searching for the answer and tried so many different steps. Then I found one very
simple solution on the pcrisk blog which solved it instantly! I can't confirm if prior steps helped, but given the consecutive nature of the steps - I'd recommend taking them haha.

The standard steps were the same as previous recommendations (none of which worked for me and seemingly for many others left in the dark) but the
7th step was the winner! So Simple,
let your computer drain all its battery then turn it back on.

1. Turn Bluetooth On
2. Re-enable Bluetooth Device
3. Update Bluetooth Driver
4. Run Windows Bluetooth Troubleshooter
5. Install Bluetooth Drivers In Compatibility Mode
6. Check The Bluetooth Support Service
7. Unplug Your Computer

Bluetooth Not Available. How To Fix It?

I thought I'd share this here because I searched many of the questions and forums and couldn't find the answer.

Issues with accessingg Bluetooth Streaming and Camera on Windows 10

Now that you have me with you let me take care of this.

Provide us additional information to assist you better with this issue:

• What is the make and model of your computer?
• What exactly happens when you try to access Bluetooth streaming on your computer?
• What is the complete error message/ error code of this issue?

If haven’t tried, update the Bluetooth drivers from Device manager by following the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.



Step 1: Update Bluetooth drivers.

• Press Windows key + X keys on the keyboard and select
  Device Manager from the context menu.
• Expand Bluetooth driver options, right click on the driver and select
  Update this software option from the context menu.
• Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the update to complete.
• After the update is complete, close the window and check if the changes are effective.

If the issue persists, download and install the latest and most compatible Bluetooth drivers from the manufacturer’s website on the computer and check if the issue is resolved.



Also, do the same for Camera drivers as well and check if you are able to access it.

Step 2: Also, I suggest you to install all the pending updates on Windows 10.

• Connect to the internet.
• Press Windows key and type
  updates.
• Click on Check for updates.
• Under Windows Updates, click on
  Check for updates.
• Try to install the updates being shown.

What is the make and model of the camera?

I would suggest you to make sure the camera is installed properly and listed under Device Manager.

Follow these steps:

• Press “Windows key + X” from keyboard.
• Select “Device Manager” option from the list.
• Check if the Camera is listed in the devices list.

If it is not listed then the Camera driver is not installed. I would suggest you to run “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter to diagnose and fix the issue.

If the camera is listed in the device manager, then perform the following troubleshooting methods:

Method 1:

You may try running the Hardware and Device troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a. Press Windows Key +R, type Control Panel.

b. Type troubleshooting in the search bar, click on troubleshooting.

c. Click on Hardware and Sound, click on Hardware and Devices.

d. Follow the steps from the wizard to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2:

If that doesn’t work, then I would suggest you to perform troubleshooting steps from the link “What
to do if you have problems with an app” to diagnose and fix if the issue is with Camera app.

Method 3:

If this doesn’t fix the issue, I would suggest you to uninstall the camera from Device Manager then reinstall it and then check if this fixes the issue.

• Search for Camera, then right click and select “Uninstall”.
