  1. Windows update broke my sound

After the latest windows update the system has stopped recognizing my Samsung SMT22A300 monitor as an audio playback device, it cannot be detected, therefor I cannot troubleshoot it in device manager, sound settings or any other part of the system or reinstall drivers for it. Sound from other devices works fine, monitor is detected as a display device through the HDMI cable but does not show up in the audio playback lists.

    Windows updates broke sound

Also with the same device? You need to look for updates from the manufacturer. That's how Windows works with updates as you know. Have you discovered- as suggested- which of those two is responsible? You can hide (block) particular Windows Updates - tutorial available in the searchable Tutorial section. You can also do that with a 3rd party tool - tends to be easier. Pausing Windows Updates (tutorial available) gives you the time to set up the block (e.g. scan for updates with 3rd party tool, select what you wish to block and do that).

I assume you both have Home - with Pro, it's easy to set updates to 'Notify' meaning no update automatically installs- only with your permission.

    Windows update broke my sound

    Good surround sound headset

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue Windows update broke my sound :p
