    Windows Update Downloading W10 Automatically

    Shortly after the "Get Windows 10" icon appeared in the system tray of my Win 8.1 installation, I made the mistake of clicking on the "Get Windows 10" icon and "reserved" my copy of Windows 10. After some research, I elected to cancel my reservation for Windows 10 and did so by again clicking the "Get Windows 10" icon and going through the process to "cancel" my reservation. (I subsequently read Brink's fine post on "Get Windows 10 Icon -Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1" and did option four to uninstall the KB3035583 update). Now when I go to windows update and "search for updates", the search result is "install windows 10" though it does allow me to view "all available updates" which includes numerous "important" security updates as well as a few "optional" updates, one of which is Windows 10. I select the "important" updates, deselect the optional updates (including windows 10), and click install then get a dialog that "Windows 10 setup files are being downloaded" and an option to "cancel" (which I do). How do I stop Windows Update from downloading Windows 10 setup files and just download the "important updates" to secure my present installation of Win 8.1? Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

    :)

  2. W10 uninstall updates

    I have a W10 issue. I uninstall latest Windows update to resolve issue. On reboot W10 automatically downloads this update again. What's the point here?

  3. Windows 10 creator update automatic repair keeps cycling

    Hi All,

    Have updated to Creator's edition, but after downloading and starting the update I now have the following symptoms: Restart, automatic repair, Windows Defender not running, Restart, automatic repair, Windows Defender not running - and it just goes round
    and round. Swich off/on of computer just sets the train in motion again.

    Previous updates from W7 to W10 and other W10 updates went well.

    As I updated from Windows 7, if I re-load W7 from my disc, will I still be able to update to W10 free?

    Many Thanks for any help.......

  4. Windows Update Downloading W10 Automatically

    I've got the same issue. I reserved my Windows 10 upgrade and then I think I clicked something in the Get Windows 10 app to say yes let's install. I changed my mind after reading stuff online and now whenever I try to install updates, it tries to download Windows 10 before any other update. I haven't tried getting rid of KB3035583 just yet, but I have unselected all updates except definition updates (3mb update), and windows 10 still tries to download. I cancel it every time for now. I tried hiding the optional Windows 10 update but this doesn't do anything either: Windows 10 still tries to download. Only thing I can do is turn off updates and never update anymore. I really don't want to do this or have to do a factory restore to 8.1 or worse: upgrade to windows 10 and then downgrade back to 8.1 within the 30 day window. Does anyone have any ideas?

    tallman,

    Are you sure KB3035583 is gone? Go to root dir C drive, expand Windows folder, expand WinSxS folder, Make sure there is not a GWX folder there, if there is then KB3035583 was not successfully uninstalled. If you still have a GWX folder, expand folder and make screenshot and post.

  6. I followed a guide on another site and removed KB3035583 and did Disk Cleanup as admin and selected "Clean up system files" and cleared Temporary installation files. I rebooted and then hid the KB3035583 update and unselect/hid the Get Windows 10 update in the optional section there, and tried to install a small NORMAL update. It said Downloading Windows 10, so i pretty much gave up.

    I let it happen and then suddenly it said 1 update completed. It was the update I selected to install. Apparently my system is saying its Downloading Windows 10 but is actually installing the updates I asked. I rebooted to confirm this. I didnt have to hide KB3035583 but had to unselect and hide the Get Windows 10 thing in optional section. Then I selected a regular important update and the same thing happened. It shows downloading Windows 10 but then is really just installing my update.

    Really wierd!

    That is weird.

    I am in a similar situation. I cannot allow the W10 upgrade because despite the "Good To Go" messages I received I was able to determine that certain hardware elements on my PC are not yet compatible with W10 but I had missed my opportunity to cancel the W10 Reservation. When I received the W10 Update notice I immediately Hid it and Uninstalled KB3035583 and made sure there were no remnants in WinSxS folder or any reference in Task Scheduler. That has been about a week ago and I was able to install some 8.1 updates last week with no problems. Make sure the GWX folder is gone.

    Windows Update Downloading W10 Automatically

    Gator - I found 19,852 items in c:\windows\winxsx but no GWX folder. No reference to GWX in task scheduler. No reference to GWX in the startup items of task manager. No result from searching for GWX folder on local drives. Searching the registry found these references to GWX:
    HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\gwx (value not set);
    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\gwx (values for contentcount, mdmmanaged, and samplenumber);
    HKLM\sofrware\microsoft\windows\currentversion\installer\userdata\s-1-5-18\products\53a14889EBC13AE4B5F3F3EDA986466/features (values for devicebrandingfeature, licensingagreementfeature, nulldriverfeature, and packageversionfeature);
    and maybe ten or fifteen more references to GWX in the registry, many of which had no value set.

    Cant Cancel W10 - I actually was considering selecting one or more of the updates I wanted, starting the update process, and watching to see if the system actually downloaded the W10 setup files or if it would only download the updates I wanted. Just thought it wise to post here and get input from others before proceeding.

    Thank you both for your time and helpful comments.

    Same exact thing happened to me. I wanted to install the Win7 updates but it said "Downloading Windows 10.' I think I found the same site you did because I also uninstalled KB3035583, did disk cleanup, and hid the KB3035583 and Get Windows 10 updates. The Windows Update main screen says "Downloading Windows 10" even though I specifically checked non-upgrade security updates only. So I am waiting to see what it actually installs. I feel as though Microsoft is forcing me to upgrade before I am ready. What happened to "you can install it whenever you want?"

    *** update*** Yes it just installed only the updates that I had selected even though it claimed to be updating to W10. I am so happy to find this forum because it was terrifying: I thought I had lost the OS on my laptop. When I deleted KB3035583 it took more than an hour of 'configuring windows' to reboot. I am going to restart again and hope for the best.

    itoldie -
    Very helpful. I believe KB3035585 may have set a registry entry that modifies the windows update dialog to say "downloading windows 10" rather than "downloading updates" and the dialog does not revert back to "downloading updates" until W10 is actually installed. This is just a guess but based on your experience and gator2013's experience, this may be what is happening. I will try selecting just one update I want and see if it installs without installing the W`0 setup files. Thank you.

    My win 7 system seems back to normal thank goodness. I agree the wrong dialog definitely looks like a bug with the uninstall of the update. Makes me quite nervous because not sufficiently tested -- hmmm what about the rest of the new OS features?

    This is why I prefer to wait a few months til things shake out.

  12. Well, for now I'm OK with how it is. Like what you said tallman, the uninstall for the KB must have neglected to remove the "Downloading Windows 10" messages during Windows Update. I can survive with this, but the only thing is I have no indication as to how many Windows 8.1 updates have been downloaded, and if it is installing them and how many have been installed, like how it used to be. It just says Getting Setup Files or something to that effect now, along with the Windows 10 icon. It would suck if you did a large collection of updates without the download/install status. It would especially suck if an update got stuck. I'm not sure you'd have any way of knowing. You just have to wait it out until it gives a success message, or until you figure out its stuck and reboot at that point.

    In any case, I hope Microsoft fixes the botched Windows Update dialogs after the KB3035583 uninstall. As it stands right now, I'm going to stick with Windows 8.1

    Windows Update Downloading W10 Automatically

    I am in the same boat. I selected the W7 updates and it says downloading WIn 10. I cancelled the request and it says that it cancelled my 20 W7 updates so I did it again. Looking at Task Manager, I see nothing downloading. This is the third try and this time. I plugged an Ethernet cable from the modem into the laptop to try and counteract the WiFi delay. But still no activity in Task Manager.

    Very frustrating.
