Windows Update Error 0x80070003 on KB4022715 and KB3186568.

Hi, I'm getting error 0x80070003 on the cumulative and .NET updates for this month (KB4022715 and KB3186568). I'm using Windows 1607 (14393.1198). My system is not compatible with the Creators update.

I've tried many different things, all have failed. Things I've tried:

I have a copy of my system in a VirtualBox VM. I'm willing to try about anything on that. Keep in mind that it takes me about 2 hours to try a single method out in the VM. I will try any fixes in the VM before trying them on my real system anyway. I know the VM uses different drivers.

Here is my posting on another forum about this problem:
Windows Update Failed, Error 0x80070003 - Windows 10

I'm really not looking to re-install or repair Windows. I understand that may be my only option later on.

    Any help is appreciated.

    :)

Windows Update Error 0x80070003 on KB4022715 and KB3186568.

Hi, does that imply you've tried it? If so, what do you believe is the problem?

    - do you mean you can't upgrade to it (the upgrade fails)?
    - there's a driver or software incompatibility?

I understand you to say SFC & DISM passed (in another forum)
    It seems you've tried this:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...-or-0x80070003

Here's some information on Windows update logs - if you can find more information on the cause of the problem, that may point you in the right direction:
Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors - Windows IT Pro | Microsoft Docs

A list of some log files:
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther
The panther logs are often hidden. Configure file explorer so that you can find the hidden files.
Locate these logs and post share links in the forum:
    setuperr.log
    setupact.log
    Setupmem.dmp
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback*.evtx
    setupapi.dev.log
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
    BlueBox.log

Trying to find out why it failed from the Windows update logs is not straightforward. Here are some guides.
Generating the Log Files for Troubleshooting Windows Updates for Windows 10 | Windows 10 content from Windows IT Pro
Windows 10, WindowsUpdate.log and how to view it with PowerShell or Tracefmt.exe Charles Allen’s Blog

This may be useful once you have readable logs as a indication of what to look for. As to accessing them, the info at the start is out of date. See above.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have not tried the Creators update for 3 reasons.

    • It wasn't automatically downloaded to my system; I didn't get any popup for it. I believe the reason for this is because my system isn't compatible with it. I don't want to force it.
    • Dell says my system hasn't been tested with the Creators Update. http://www.dell.com/support/article/...update?lang=EN My PC is the Alienware Aurora first model. It is 7 years old. It's not a revision model so it's not a R1, R2, etc. They support R5 and R6.
    • I've read where others have tried to update and had problems with the Alienware Command Center. This includes the Thermal Controls which control fan speeds. That is a huge concern for me. I once had my system fans running full blast and it was unbearable. So yes, there is likely a driver incompatibility with the fan controls on the system, however I haven't personally tested it and don't want to (at this time).
SFC and DISM both run without any errors now.

Yes, I have tried the things listed on this page:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...-or-0x80070003
in multiple ways, both manually and with batch files.

You gave me alot to do and work on, I appreciate it. I got SOME of it done.

Today I rebooted and an update installed, it got up to 75% and never showed any errors so I think it was successful. I have no idea what update that was. It doesn't show in Update history. It was *NOT* the cumulative update or the .NET update. The cumulative update always stops at 7% or 8%. The cumulative update and .NET update downloaded again. I decided to restart 1 more time just to make sure my log files are updated. I did and the updates failed as usual.

    Today's Event Viewer log says:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070003: 2017-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4022715).

I've gathered up 3 log files.

    • WindowsUpdate.log generated by PowerShell -> Get-WindowsUpdateLog (CREATED TODAY)
    • setupact.log (DATED TODAY)
    • setupapi.dev.log (DATED TODAY)
    All 3 logs: Logs.zip

I have no idea why it can't create the files (see setupact.log). I have 83GB free and the update is just 1 GB.

I don't have any C:\$Windows.~BT folders or anything like that at this time. Hidden files and system files are turned on. I couldn't find setupmem.dmp or rollback*.* or BlueBox.log files. I found 2 setuperr.log files. Both were 0 bytes, even after copying to desktop.

This page: Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors - Windows IT Pro | Microsoft Docs said to try CHKDSK /F so I went ahead and ran it today. I had to schedule it to run on a bootup. I did that had and it decided to stop working after 100% and I had to power off/power back on. CHKDSK results: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume lab - Pastebin.com I haven't tried the update since CHKDSK, however, it was installing as I did the reboot to run the CHKDSK so I really don't think it helped.

The last few links you posted above didn't work and I didn't get to try ALL of the log stuff out yet. If the above logs can't help then I'm willing to try more.

Edit 1: Fixed CHKDSK results link.

Edit 2: I'm not sure how editing works here, I hope I'm not breaking any rules. I'm not trying to bump this post, but I do have some new info which may be helpful.

I have a May 8th backup. Yesterday I restored it to a VM. Today I tried the update in it and it worked! I don't want to use this to restore my system unless I have no choice. I've never actually used these backups on my real system, I've only tested them in VMs. This backup includes Windows and software only (100 Gigs). It does not include the 1TB of media that I have backed up elsewhere (on bluerays). If I restore this backup, I'll spend days restoring all of the media and weeks re-download Steam games.

I've already mentioned that I also have a backup of my current system in a VM for testing. If I knew what I could copy from the May 8th backup VM to the current backup VM in order to get it working that would be great. I've already tried copying the registry (full config folder and just the basic 5 registry files from the config folder) and that didn't work. I got a BSOD on the current backup when trying.

Hi dalchina, thanks for the reply. I got the problem fixed and I should have updated this sooner, my apologies.

I was scared to do the system restore to my hard drive because I didn't want to lose anything, so I bought an 480GB SSD and restored my May backup to it. I then ran Windows Update and ALL updates worked!
    https://s15.postimg.org/3zb1o8eaj/image.jpg

I figured while my system state was in limbo I would try the Creators update and my drivers were compatible and it's working fine (so far). If this would have failed I could have easily restored my May backup again.

So basically I got to restore my system while keeping my hard drive safe in case something went wrong, and got the Creators update as a bonus.

I really appreciate your help. I also agree that it's possible that the only fix was an update to a new build. I probably could have updated to Creators and had everything fixed.

    Thanks again for the help.
