Windows 10: Windows Update eternally failing. No prompt as to why, only that it fails.

Hello, for the past several days my PC has been stuck on an eternal loop of "prompt updates available --> download updates --> install updates --> prompt restart --> I click restart --> it restarts --> update installation stuck at 10% --> fails and continues on to restart --> on startup says update failed, undoing changes --> prompt updates available". Some posts and threads I have seen have said to just reinstall windows but I am afraid of losing my work data and there's a lot to backup. I hope that there is at least some other methods I could try first to fix this before I have to go on to that or any other extreme option.

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
