Windows Update failed, now laptop is locked up...

    Hello Folks,
On Tuesday I opened my laptop and was greeted by "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC. The message stated my options, "advanced options" or "shutdown" and where to find the log file C:\Windows\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrails.txt.
tried the advanced options. Continue to Win10 - system rebooted, Troubleshoot -reset nothing, Restore, reset startup repair, sys recovery. Either they caused rebooting which launched attempting repair or just shutdown. Restarting generated another instance of attempting repair. which always ended up at advanced options. Tried Command Prompt which launched a DOS (those were the good old days) window with admin privileges. Command line automatically showed "x:\windows\system32>" Now where the devil did an "X" drive come from??? I tried numerous times to change to C:\ with no luck. Can't even backspace to remove the entry. I also tried DISM with an error 87, PXE with E18 and one other thing that I can't remember. Oh, can't boot into safe mode either. Wasn't thrilled about being require to upgraded to Win 10. Matter of fact I was waiting to the deadline to upgrade but thanks to the little updates with hidden agendas I woke up one morning , woke up one morning and there it was. So, I've been doing a lot of reading on this subject and it looks like this situation has been around for awhile (just like the NVidia/Vista memory allocation situation no body could fix). I sure hope I don't have to trash this laptop cause it's only a year and a half old and has a lot of info on it.

    Thank You,

    Sys Info attached

    :)

  2. Update KB3163018 fails to install- in the year 1601?!

    Yes.

Computer hasn't locked up since I tried manually installing the updates (not long before this post)

    The update is still failing.

I mention the lock up a lot as its the same problem as I had before the last factory reset I did, but sods law- its stopped locking up now? not that I'm complaining mind....

But this update is still failing anyway that hasnt changed so now I'm stuck in an update loop.

    Hi Dave,
    How's the weather up there?

Only access to the system is thru a command prompt window. Admin.
    Can't boot to safe mode.
No way to back up any thing.. Have a back up from 8.1 system but it's not even close to what's on there now.
Can not run anything from DVD, or USB.
I do have another system that is fully operational which I'm using now.

Is there any way to download a bootable repair install on this box, burn to DVD and use in laptop?

    Get a working computer.
Use Tech Bench link to download your edition of Windows 10, language and bit-version.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/soft...load/techbench
Burn it to a bootable DVD or USB.
Use it to do a Clean Install.
Bite the bullet. Start Fresh. No "carry-over" baggage.

Windows Update failed, now laptop is locked up...

    feasibility?
Would it be possible to remove the HD from the laptop and either backup or clone the info onto a separate directory on my desktop or put it on a flash drive ????
would the repair version be bootable ???

    My knowledge is limited.
Here is all I know that I can offer to you.......................

Get the bootable DVD or USB created.
Take it to the problem computer.
Set the Boot Order to either CD/DVD or USB, depending on which media you have created.
    Insert the media.
    Restart.
When you come to Install Now screen, there is also a Repair option > pick that one.
See if you can do the repair instead of do a clean install.

That is all I know, I'm afraid.

    Good luck.

    Will do...
I can access the so called BIOS on the Toshiba (craziest BIOS I've ever scene)
I just did a DIR on the laptop and it looks like all the info is still there.
Found one called takeown.exe, perhaps if I can change the ownership on that "X" it might solve the problem.
But I do like the idea of the repair proggie so me thinks I'll go buy flash drive and see what happens.

Can we leave this open for a bit and see if anyone else replies?
Thank you for your time and information I didn't know about the repair program so I've learned something.

Thank You very much for your time and I'll let you know how things work out.

    To answer these questions:
    1. Basically yes, but it is recommended that you backup your stuff onto a separate hard drive.
    2. No, it is an in-place upgrade which means that you have to be in a Windows 10 environment to actually be able to do the in-place upgrade.

I take it that by being in Windows 10 Environment I need to be in Win10 somehow. According to diskpart the only partition on the HD is an "x" which I think is the RE. I can do a DIR from an Admin command prompt window which is as close as I can get to accessing the HD. except when I boot off the flash drive I get a dual boot screen with the only option being Windows 10. When I click that it goes to the "attempting repairs" loop. I also get the F8 option which again goes to the "attempting repairs" loop.

I've also tried my Recovery Disks but their Win 8.1. That didn't help.

Could you post a photo of the partitions in diskpart?

    Don't have that capability.
When I burnt the ISO file to USB how big should the program take?
The article recommended a 32GB or larger Flash Drive, it only used a bit over 4.
Also I tried the 64 version, perhaps I should use 32?
