Windows Update Failed To Install Latest Update

Hello everyone I have a problem updating my windows to version 1703 (Currently on 1607). What happened was on my PC there was an update available and decided to update after it restarted I got the screen "working on updates" So I decided to leave it there for a while and did something else when I came back all I saw was a black screen the PC wasn't like restarting or anything. I waited 30 minutes and nothing has changed just black screen so I decided to force turn off my PC and turn it on again my PC was checking for repairs then went back to updating when it got to 87% the update just froze like nothing was moving at all not even the loading thing it's just literally froze I waited an hour and nothing so unfortunately I forced turned off my PC and it restored back to the previous version I look through the update history it says I have updated the windows 10 creators update privacy settings? which was the one I failed and I looked at the version I was and it's still 1607 (screenshots below) and when I try to update it says it's up to date. I am kinda panicking a little and was wondering why is this happening to my gaming computer.

Oh by the way I went to troubleshooting and this is what I got a lot of errors

Update:I ran troubleshooter again and got the same thing "Repair Windows Update Database Corruption" Dang this makes me more panicking. Honestly, I hope this really gets fixed

  2. Latest update KB3081455 failed to install

    Hi Spacemarine,

Interesting. I too had tidied the Start Menu (on two machines) mainly by moving the entries under Users\ myname..... etc to Program Files\Microsoft\Windows etc. where most of the entries reside, and by deleting all the Micky Mouse tiles (the teeny bopper
    stuff).

My earlier guess that there was something the update could not find was near the mark then!

In my case sfc /scannow cleaned one laptop (Lenovo) completely, but in the other (ASUS) there were dozens (hundreds?) of entries for directories either having no owner or multiple owners. Strange as both PCs are set up the same except one (Lenovo) started
as Windows 7 Pro and the other as Windows 7 Ultimate.

Before attempting this update the systems worked with no trouble even with the revised Start Menu, and they work fine now even with the scannow errors!

  3. Latest update KB3081455 failed to install

    Miriam,

I have exactly the same symptoms as you and have a theory (as yet untested) that it may be to do with the update trying to alter things that are not there.

In my case I have disabled all services and startups that seem not have a bearing on the "normal" running of a Windows PC and thus have created a system devoid of the Micky Mouse stuff (and very close to my old Win 7 system).

Part of KB3081455 is to update Hyper-V and guess what I have disabled?

I'm taking the advice from A Sloppy Roast Beef Sandwich below and am hoping the next update will clear things.

    Good luck.

Windows Update Failed To Install Latest Update

Hi, just a note on that most recent update:
Upgrading to Creators Update requires installing KB4013214

It seems like the download failed.

Given your repairs, an excellent start, I'd suggest you do this by way of basic checks:
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

Then from an admin prompt run
    sfc /scannow

and post the result (not the whole log).

I would recommend you MANUALLY download the Creator's Upgrade.

    Why?
    - it lets you create a useful bootable medium with some repair features
    - you can use it to do a future clean install or in-place upgrade
    - if the upgrade fails, you can repeat it without downloading again.
Download Windows 10 ISO File - Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

Now, once you are happy with your disk and integrity of your Windows, please take this precautionary step:
Download and use Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot disk - and you will need a large external disk or similar
and create a disk image (in particular, option Windows Backup).

Then do the upgrade using the iso you have downloaded.
When you upgrade, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals, esp. wireless mouse.

If you end up with an unbootable PC you can then restore it exactly as it was.
Everyone who contributes here regularly uses disk imaging routinely as far as I know. Many advantages.

    Your update log:
    E.g. discussion here:
Update is not allowed to download due to regulation msg in WindowsUpdate.log file

    Hello thank you for replying
I did the chkdsk and the sfc /scannow and both of them looked like it didn't have any errors

sfc /scannow log (The log doesn't seem to have any problems)

So about the manually installing the creator's upgrade because oh boy I have no idea where to go honestly. I was wandering if I could try this and see what happens? (Sorry I sound stupid)

Hi, if you follow the link I gave you to a tutorial here, you should be able to download the current major build (the CU).

But don't get over-excited- before you upgrade, as I said, create a disk image. (Macrium, Windows Backup, to external data storage).

That way you can recover if things go wrong- and they can.

Before you upgrade using the iso you've downloaded (or you could burn a DVD or create a bootable USB drive) disconnect any unnecessary peripherals. Wireless mice have sometimes caused problems.

I don't see the download to upgrade to CU All I see is just Windows ISO

You download the ISO. The ISO file is what you use to update to the CU.

For example, mount the ISO and run setup.exe.

Or burn the ISO to a DVD, boot normally, and run setup.exe from the DVD.

You have to have something as a source of information for the upgrade- all the new Windows files. Those files are in the ISO file.

Starting Setup.exe starts the installation process.

It's the same as from step 4 here:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
(Don't read the beginning of the tutorial or you will be more confused).

Ok, ill see these steps. I don't think I can create a disc image though cause that takes a lot of space to backup and I don't have like a hard drive or anything

    Amazon? Ebay? computer shop?

If you have really fast upload speeds and enough cloud storage space that would do I suppose.

Here's the trade-off - say £40-50 on a disk (new) vs seeking technical support for an unbootable PC and struggling over a couple of days, and then having to clean install.

Plus the disk image acts as a full data backup - you can retrieves files and folders from it.

If your disk fails, you can just put a new one in, restore your system image and you're back where you were in an hour. Without that, you have to clean install. Same with ransomware.

Well, I've seen people in tears when their PC has gone down and they had no backups...

Your only options would seem to be begging or a free cloud service- but depends on your upload speed.

The problem is that it's Gbs of data- so you'd need an ultra-fast upload speed.

I guess I either might just wait until I actually get a USB that's over 80 GB (that's the requirement for me) or just not update at all
