  1. Windows Update June 10, 2020 - No Desktop

I was prompted to install an update via the notification icon. I selected update and restart. The update occurred, I was presented with the welcome screen with the Bing Photo, and logged onto my computer. I got a black screen with a functioning mouse. The keyboard was still responsive in so far as I could toggle num lock on and off. I had no desktop including desktop icons, taskbar, start button, notification area. I ctrl alt del and got the screen where I could select task manager and other options. I selected Task Manager and checked what was running. The computer was relatively free in terms of CPU and memory capacity, not much was taxing those two hardware items. I checked and Windows Explorer was running. I selected to restart Windows Explorer. Nothing happened and Windows Explorer did not come back to the list of running apps and services. I ctrl alt del again and selected Restart. The computer restarted and I now have a desktop.

The updates that were installed were as follows:

    KB4560960: Cum Update Windows 10 Version 1903

KB 4561600: Security Update for Abobe flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1903

KB2264602 Version 1.317.1105.0: Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus

I am wondering what occurred during this update that caused this problem.

    :)

  2. DirectX June Update

Microsoft has released an updated version of DirectX for June, although it isn’t clear whether the update is just for DirectX 9.0c or for DirectX 10 on Vista as well. Regardless of this, it is still recommended that Vista users update their systems because Vista will benefit from any DirectX 9.0c fixes when playing DirectX 9 games. The web installer is only for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), whilst the redistributable version will also work with Vista. The download links are listed below:
    • Web installer for Windows 2000, XP and 2003: download [44KB - 41.4MB]
    • Redistributable installer for Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista: download [53.6MB]

Windows Update June 10, 2020 - No Desktop

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
