  1. Windows Update KB5009469 Net Framework 3.5 & 4.8 Update Fails with File Corruption Resuly...

My HP Windows 10 machine was updated to Windows 11 without issue. Subsequent updates have been successfully installed. However, the recent "2022-01 Cumulative Update for Net Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 11" fails to install and I get an error code 0x80073712 stating that files are corrupted.I have run SFC/scannow and it reports no issues. At a loss. Don't know if perhaps the files within the update are corrupted. Any ideas would be appreciated. Am considering wiping the machine and installing a clean version of Windows 11.

KB4586876 Cumulative Update .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 Windows 10 Jan. 12 Win Update

    Hi Denis:
Thank you for your detailed instructions!! This will probably take several days & I'll keep you updated.

I did steps 1 & 2. This installed more updates than I could count...something like 20-30. However, KB4586876 was not listed. Unfortunately, I had to undo several things (I now remember why I didn't update all MS products). I have Word, Excel, & Access from 2003, as well as Word & Access 2016. Updating MS products caused a "file validation" problem whenver I opened a .doc file. I fixed that (with a registry hack). However, it did something to Word 2016, where all my .doc & .docx files were opened by Word 2003 & Word 2016 wasn't an option under "Open with...". I ended up restoring everything from Macrium Reflect.

I will now start with step 3.2.

Thank you. After checking again, my settings are the same as yours. Also, As Denis pointed out, I had looked at the wrong key. I checked the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v4\Full & found it to be the same as yours.

    Hi @Try3 & @Ghut:

I tried to install the runtime from Ghut post #22 (Denis: your Step 4.2) & it said that I already had the latest versions installed. I then tried to reinstall .Net Framework & went to the catalog:
PHP Code: 2021-01 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64 (KB4586876)
    Last Modified: 1/8/2021
but I couldn't download it. Basically, nothing happened & I got this image:

Windows Update KB5009469 Net Framework 3.5 & 4.8 Update Fails with File Corruption Resuly... [IMG]

    I tried Step 5.2 in post #26, but I show both 3.5 & 4.8 installed.

I guess I'll try Step 6.2 now...turning off .NET Framework 3.5 &4.8 & turning them back on. Before I do, do I need to reboot in between. I don't want to screw this up.

Thanks again to both of you!!

    Windows Updates failed to instal

I'm not sure how differant XP media center Edition is but you could clear the history \ cache if these folders are there.

    Step 1 Register DLL files.

    =================

By trying this step, we can check if the update engines are working properly.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click Start and Run, type "Regsvr32 atl.dll" (without quotes) in the Open box and click OK.

Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and atl.dll

    3. Similarly, one by one, register the files listed below:

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    Regsvr32 wups2.dll

    Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    Regsvr32 wups.dll

    Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgr.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: If you encounter errors while registering any of these files then skip that file and continue with the next one.

If the issue persists, let's move on to the steps below to verify Windows Update services and temporary folders.

Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services.

    =========================================

    1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

    2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

    3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

    4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

    5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.

    6. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

    7. Please repeat the above steps with the other services:

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Event Log

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Note: Event log service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles; this service does not have an option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

If it still does not help, let's proceed to step 3.

Step 3 Reload the Update temporary folders.

    ===================================

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update is containing corrupted files. Let's erase all the files there to get the system clean.

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

Please test the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

Windows Update KB5009469 Net Framework 3.5 & 4.8 Update Fails with File Corruption Resuly...

KB4586876 Cumulative Update .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 Windows 10 Jan. 12 Win Update

    Phil,

This might all be pretty confusing now.

    I suggest

1 Turn on updates for other MS products - my post #22
2 Run WU to see if it now shows that KB4586876 .Net update as being required

3.1 If WU lists it then install it.
4.1 If it installs and there are no remaining problems, stick the kettle on.

3.2 If WU still does not list it then use that .Net fixer tutorial I gave you a link to - my post #18
4.2 If the problem defies the fixer tool then study the Ghot guidance in that other thread I gave you a link to [ - my post #18] and consider Ghot's suggestion of re-installing the runtime [his post #21].
5.2 If it refuses to install, try reinstalling v3.5 - Install .Net Framework 3.5 - TenForumsTutorials The update is for both 3.5 & 4.8 but I suppose there's a chance that reinstalling 3.5 would give something a kick up the pants enough to get it all working.
6.2 If it still won't play, consider unloading then reloading both .Net entries in CP, P&F, Turn Windows features on & off. We used to do that for WMP in Windows 7 so it is a pretty well-established method but I have not seen anybody apply it to .Net entries before so you might want to discuss it further before doing anything about it.

    Best of luck,
    Denis
