Windows Update missing in Control Panel

Hi, yep, it's gone. Not there- and I don't know when or why. So considering restore points and disk images may not be the most appropriate (i.e. would be a random option timewise).

I found these fixes (the same registry mod):
Windows Update in Windows 10 Control Panel missing 4sysops
Microsoft System Center Suite: Windows Update missing from the "Classic" Control Panel in Windows 10 TP Build 9926

    - nothing I could find here on this.

    However:
    While I can set Uxoption = 0 (currently 1)

Windows Update missing in Control Panel [IMG]

    I can't set IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled =0 as I get
'Error writing to the registry was unsuccessful' - even if I run the editor as admin.

Similarly I can't merge a reg file - insufficient privileges.

    I've also tried pstools
[solved] Cannot Import To Registry.. "Not All Data Was Successfully Written To The Registry. Some Keys Are Open By The System Or Other Process, Or You Have Insufficient Privileges To Perform This Operation"
    but (remarkably) still get

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Me? I'm on my way to installing Linux "Mint" and saying sayonara (think other very bad words)

    to msft and b gates.

Why bother looking for an alternative registry hack.
Open Settings....Update and Security....if not happy with that, right click on it to send to Start.
Once opened from there you could if you wished then pin it to Taskbar.

Hi, I don't believe that offers me the options of choosing Windows features for example. Plus I'd prefer not to have sthg broken..

I wasn't specifically looking for a registry hack.. just a solution. So far that's the only one, and seems a precise match.

  6. For the record, mine is set to 1 as well and WU is opening just fine.
My Uxoption is set to 4, not sure why, since it should be 0 or 1, but it works.

Run this to reset group policies or check all keys yourself for something, which might be related to disabling WU.

    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /f

    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /f

Do not forget to run SFC scan as well, something might have removed required files.

You can use this tool as a replacement; Windows Update MiniTool Download

Hi, thanks. Hmm, 4 is strange, but if it only checks bit 0...

Basic question now (read near end) - has MS actually removed the CP WU applet?
And if so, where's the functionality for Windows features where you could add or remove them?

I checked locations where Windows Update might have been disabled from display in the CP - nothing found.
SFC /Scannow failed, but just the opencll.dll or whatever the file name is (Nvidia).
However it did give a number of reports of duplicate ownership, reported as an error.

I did an in-place upgrade repair install- no change.
I ran the commands as above and restarted - no change.

Here is why the registry change is 'resisted':
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...f-af11f0062934

I don't think my laptop will let me boot from a non-UEFI compatible boot disk to try an external reg. edit as I have rather limited UEFI/BIOS options.

Just wondering what happens if I launch Windows update manually - wuapp.exe? not wuaucpl.cpl..

This article appears to indicate MS is removing the Windows Update applet - which is odd, because it's written in Jan 2015, but I think it's been maintained.
Turn off Automatic Updates in Windows 10 - 4sysops
This refers to the same reg. hack.

Which is strange- I'm back on 10586.0 having chosen not to apply updates during th repair upgrade, used the same disk (FWIW), and this was a clean install originally. I suppose I'm now wondering if I've ever had the applet on this PC- about 6-8 weeks old.

    This is relevant:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...77e4e11?page=3

That's where I'm up to currently.

Hi, thanks. Well that is strange.

    1. Yes, I now have Windows Update back in the Control Panel
    but
    2. It now results in this (rather than the traditional Windows Update dialogue:

Windows Update missing in Control Panel [IMG]

(Some settings ..... only appears here as far as I know - not in Privacy, General, for example)

    3. Now I note from your tutorial (I should surely have learnt to look there by now...*chuckle )
"In Windows 10, Windows Update was made deprecated in the Control Panel and now only accessible from within Settings."

    - which matches what I had begun to suspect.

But all my experience of Win 10 as an upgrade and as a clean install, and even 1st time install on a new PC has been that the traditional Win update dialogue has been present.

That I cannot understand, unless it's some quick internet update (and on this one I'm still on 10586.0 after the repair install).

So assuming this is so, how does one now access the Windows features (where one could disable/uninstall IE and WMP for example) which used to be part of the Win update dialogue, and was sometimes useful for repairs?

    Thanks!

I don't recall there was such an option under Windows Update.

What you asked are under Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off

Windows Update had been removed from Control Panel since Insider Preview build 9926.

I'm not an Insider.. and as I said, this is the first time I've actually seen this.. and hadn't come across it. And I positively know W Update (old style) was sthg I saw until recently.. very occasionally I'd go there and view the history. How odd.

What I was alluding to ................
Build 9926 was released on Jan 23rd 2015.
Win 10 RTM was released on July 29th, 2015.

So, if Preview build 9926 did not have WU in CP on Jan 2015, how was it possible that Win 10 RTM would have WU in CP on July 29th and onwards ?
