Windows 10: Windows update no longer works

This Windows installation is one of 5 machines that I have and it is used for machine control and unfortunately I must keep up with Windows updates since applications are also being updated.


- Frequent check of Windows Update:
Message "Last checked: Today Today's date"
At this point my assumption is: Updates are working


- Manual Check for Update:
Message "We couldn't connect to the update service.
We'll try again later, or you can check now.
If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet.
All services are operational.
Network is hardwired and no WiFi, fully operational since machine is talking to external hardware.


- Run Troubleshooting:
Message "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"


- Stop wuauserv, cryptSvc, bits & msi server
Delete SoftwareDistribution folder
Delete Catroot2 folder
- Restart services
- Reboot
- Manual check for update still doesn't work


At this point I am irate since I have weekly disk images and now I must restore my machine.
Good idea, since I have 4 backups.
Wrong, all backups have the same problem.


- Must reload the latest "Version 2004 OS Build 19041.508 and keep my apps and data.
Update still doesn't work.

I know I am missing updates on this machine since all my other machines have later updates.
I am most reluctant to do a clean install because I also have updates to applications which is also difficult to keep current.
It is ludicrous that MS does not provide an update replacement tool that reloads all pertinent software and resets the environment.

Windows 98 and ME no longer updatable...

Quite right, XP is still listed in technet. Win 98 unfortunately isn't. Windows 3.1 and 3.2 are listed though.

Currency Gadget no longer updating

My currency gadget is no longer updating, it says: "Cannot connect to service", now I have the sidebar and gadgets installed from 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7 on my windows 8.1 laptop.

But it does not work because I don't have the folder as in step 5:
5. Delete the folder named 53eab605-3b97-4da0-8e92-ea49d47af529


Did Microsoft stop completely with this service?





Does anyone know another solution to fix this?
