1. Windows Update with Troubleshooter

I usually don't have any trouble with Windows Updates. But something odd is happening with this one. A few days ago I was told to make an update labeled KB4598242. I did it--no problem. The Windows log says it the update was made successfully.

A few days later, I was again asked to make update KB4598242--the same number. But it didn't work this time. As soon as the screen opened where it starts counting the percentage done, as it usually does, a few seconds later it went blank. I briefly got the Dell logo--then blank again. The computer stayed on with blank screen and no "in progress notice" indefinitely until I did a hard reboot.

After that, I got this message:

There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: 0x80070002.

I've probably done this a dozen times and the same thing keeps happening. The computer, which is brand new, is otherwise running fine.

I tried the Troubleshooter several times, and it said that it found an issue and removed it, but the problem keeps coming up. Below is the troubleshooter report.

    Any ideas?

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Windows Update with Troubleshooter :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

  4. Windows Update with Troubleshooter

    Vista Pre-SP1 vs. Vista SP1

I've been Windows Updating for two straight days and I finally saw SP1. If you want to troubleshoot it, follow these steps:

    • Show hidden updates
    • Manually install any failed updates (google the KB_____ and install from the windows site)
    • Make sure everything in Device Manager is good to go
I had to do step two for like 4 or 5 updates to be able to see SP1.

Any other benchmarks you guys want to see? I might try PCMark05 (I think it works on Vista).
