Windows 10: Windows Update won't run

I have had the automatic update with notification to me first on for a long time and it has worked flawlessly for a long time. Recently I realized that I had not been notified of an update for a long time. When I go to Settings/Update & Security I get a message saying: "Something went wrong. Try to open Settings again later". I've been getting that message for about 3 months now. All of the help functions, and trouble shooters tell me to run Windows Update, but it simply won't run. I'm sure my computer is very vulnerable in that it hasn't been updated for a long time now.

Windows updates won't install!

I had the same problem when i repaired my O/S, i forgot the steps on how to fixed it, but it is in the microsoft support forum.

You have to reinstall the windows updater, then restart the updating service.

Step 1: Run Windows app troubleshooter.

Step 2: Run shell commands for Windows store and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

• 
  Press Windows key + X and select
  Command prompt(Admin) to open elevated Command prompt.
  
• 
  Type the following commands.
  
  
  
  powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml
  
• 
  Hit enter, the blackscreen will appear still for a couple of seconds. After a couple of second a new line saying C:\.... will appear.
  
• 
  Close Command Prompt.
  
• 
  Try to start the Windows Store again.
