Hello everyone. Something strange has happened to me with the last update of Windows. The patches were downloaded and installed on March 13. With restart and everything correctly.
And as usual, I always check the update history and see that patch KB4088776 says: A restart is required to finish the installation. Very strange since in the information of the operating system I get that I am in the 16299.309 version. *Shock Restart it but nothing, follow the same message.

I think it is perhaps due to an uncommon bug but today March 14 I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter of Windows itself and found 3 things. I clicked on the next button and then close. I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter again. Of the 3 problems one disappeared, another is as corrected with green circle and the other is as detected with yellow triangle.

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete. [IMG]

"In detailed information" it says the following :

A possible error was detected in the Windows Update database____Detected
Possible problems may prevent Windows Update from keeping your system up to date.
Repair damage in the Windows Update database____Without executing
One of the steps to solve WU problems is to remove the updates from the computer and download them again. Do you want to try this step now? Depending on the network configuration, download costs may apply.

When I close everything, nothing else happens. I run the Windows Update Troubleshooter again and it shows the same thing.

But when I use the Windows Update Troubleshooter from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...troubleshooter I got another result

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete. [IMG]

I have no idea what you mean by "DataStoreAndWULogFiles.zip" and the rest of the message.

Although it says completed, corrected, I still see the patch KB4088776 with the text below saying : A restart is required to finish the installation

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete. [IMG]

I do not know what to think. It will be a bug and leave it like that and wait for the next patch or do something. I did well to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

Thanks for the response and best regards.

    :)

Hi, regarding the Windows update troubleshooter, you could try this:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

(Please feel free to search and browse the extensive Tutorial section)

In the News section there is a thread per update per build.
    Cumulative Update KB4088776 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.309 - Mar. 13 - Windows 10 Forums

Have a look and see of any comments relate to the update being applied but a restart still being needed.

Note- several updates have led to exactly that, yet if you check your Windows build (Windows key + R, winver) it is correct, and no action has been needed.

When I had that happen once, I uninstalled the particular update, then used the manual download link (there's one in each such thread as above) and reinstalled it.

From what I could read that is to clean the history. Also to allow re-download patches that could not be completed download, installation or an error. But in my case I did not get any error message in the download and also the system restarted showing that the steps were complemented. The update search engine tells me that I'm up to date. About the reset the Windows Update. I would do it, but I have read that for some it fixes it and for others it gives other error messages or something similar.

If I found a user who apparently also encountered the same situation. But I did not ask if the message is during the search for updates or in the history.I think there is a difference.

You want to say if in system information it shows me that I am in Build 16299.309, then I am updated and nothing else to do. My English is basic and sometimes I think the translator does not do it well and end up changing the message a bit.

I want to follow the suggestion. But It is that before making a decision or action I usually analyze it or ask a little more, as long as it is something new for me
    :/

Before Reset the Windows Update should I take into account the results of the Windows Update Troubleshooter ? The WUT of Windows itself does not correct the problem it finds. But the other WUT shows me (after the second attempt) as "corrected" and "completed".

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete. [IMG]

What I do not understand is why the WUT tells me that one of the steps is to remove the updates and re-download them (red rectangle). But when I give in "apply this correction" does not eleminate the update(Should?)

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete. [IMG]

Already in the final step in the report it tells me: that it is "corrected" in the first line. In the second it indicates "completed" and the text there says that one of the steps is to remove and re-download the update (is it supposed that WUT already did it or should I do it?)
And what is that appears in the green box. Should I download it, remove it?

Sorry if maybe I have not explained well before. I think it would be much easier if the OS language were in English because translating the texts of the images is a lot.

Hi, thanks. I can't tell you why that is, but as I suggested at the end of my first post, where an update is left with a pending restart, you can try manually uninstalling it and reinstalling, as I did.

There is a history of a few updates which have left a number of people with a pending restart being reported in Update History, yet the update has been successfully applied. I haven't (until now) seen that for a Flash update.

What I did was to go to the Control Panel, Programs and Features, View Installed Updates, and then uninstall the update in question.

As regards the various troubleshooters, scripts and ways of 'fixing' Windows Update- it depends what each one does exactly, as you might guess. Things they may do include stopping and restarting services, clearing SoftwareDistribution\Download, re-registering dlls etc.

It is not uncommon to find running one troubleshooter does not fix the problem.

Notice this mentions two things- damage to the database, and trying to reapply the update.
Clearing SoftwareDistribution\Download could be related to the first, whilst uninstalling the update and reinstalling it could address the second - both of which I suggested in my first post.

I don't know- an outcome of running the troubleshooter as you know. You could of course have a look at it... yours appears a lot larger than some.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond *Smile Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

Good news.. and if you're not already doing so - use disk imaging routinely to secure your system e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets.

Lets you restore your PC (Windows and data disks/partitions which you've imaged) even if your disk fails or is infected with ransomware.
