Windows 10: Windows Updates cause desktop to get "stuck" Please Help

I apologize for the long post... just want to thoroughly explain my problem.


So after some recent problems I figured i would just reinstall windows directly to 1803 edition. I used the official windows USB that i bought a while to format my hard drive and reinstall. It worked fine but it installed 1607 again. I thought because it was connected to the internet it would update me to the latest version (1803)? Anyway, I then figured before it install all updates for 1607 and then tries to install 1803 i would just install 1803 with an ISO file on a USB drive. It failed in the beginning stages so i figured i will just have to go through the regular windows update. It downloaded a bunch of updates including 1803 and then prepared to install. I restarted my PC and they started to work and apply. My PC restarted a couple of times like it should have. Then on of the updates it got to 54% and restarted and windows did not turn back, but the computer remained on.

I've ran into this problem before and if i restart I know it will revert me back to the previous version. I can not find a similar problem on the internet. All other problems are getting stuck at a % or being in a boot loop of some sort. Should I just leave it like this and if so for how long? Is there something else I can do to so I don"t have to revert to 1607?

windows update stuck at installation screen and cannot get to desktop

Hi Sue,

To understand the issue better, I would like to ask some questions:

• Is the computer stuck in the Installing updates screen?
• For how long is the computer stuck in the screen?
• When was the computer last updated?
• Is the screen showing any percentage of installation?

Sometimes the installation might take a long time to install if the update is of large size. So, I suggest you to wait for sometime and check if the system boots to the desktop. If it is taking a longer time, then perform a Power Drain by following the steps
provided below:

• Shut down the Computer.
• Remove all power source (including battery if it is a laptop).
• Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
• Connect the power source and start the computer.
• After the computer boots to the desktop, suggest you to install all the pending updates.

Win10: windows update stuck at never ending loop ?

When in win10:

• Update&security -> Windows update -> Finding update... .... .... ....

Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
- Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.
