Windows 10: Windows Using Upwards of 60% RAM when Idle

Hey community,


I've noticed when my system is idle (nothing actively open), it's using 50% to 60% RAM. I've searched around a bunch and tried some suggestions, but none have fixed the issue. I've booted into safe mode in an attempt to find the source of the issue but wasn't able to as the system idled at only 15%.


My computer has 16 GB of RAM, but I can really only use half of it. Looking through the running processes in Task Manager and Resource Monitor, the usage values don't even add up to the amount used - something hidden is using a bunch of extra RAM.


If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.


System Specs:

Intel Core i7 6700k

16 GB RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB

High idle ram usage 8gb using 60%

- Not a fix for your unknown RAM use (Greg's suggestions should help with that), and this only adds up to a bit under 1GB use but...

A system is not at idle with around eight Chrome browser Windows and tabs open.

Discord, and two active searches. Not to mention a system hogging 'Anti-malware' program.

Desktop Window Manager is using more than usual as well.

- It looks like you have a bit of DELL bloatware running too.

- What is the RAM use straight after re-booting Windows ?

60% Memory Usage AT IDLE

I have around 60% RAM usage AT IDLE. No apps open. 12 GBs of ram. That's 7.2 GBs of RAM used to do nothing but start the pc up and idle at the desktop. how is this possible? I don't even have any apps open. Some big contributors is "Search" (I'm norwegian
so in the picture it says "Søk"), Antimalvare Service Executable (Windows Defender, which I have disabled but still is active!), and "System" (ntoskrnl.exe which I don't how to disable [it used to use half a gigabyte before but now it only uses 60 megabytes]).

In the picture google chrome is open but it is only around 3% of ram. Closing it and force exiting google chrome from Task Manager makes my RAM usage idle at 57%

This leaves me with 4 and a half GBs of ram. Fallout 4 uses around 4 gbs of ram and just crashed on me after posting this. I can't even use my computer for gaming. I need this fixed or else my $900 I spent on this computer was a waste.

ive seen similair threads, and have tweaked the registry values in similair youtube videos.

just from a normal startup I peak at around 60% used ram out 16 gb installed ( 10ish gb).

most of the ram is being used by system prcesses mostly reading anywhere from.1-.2 % for each process. I am very confused what is causing this and would like to know if anyone else has seen an issue like this?

after registry tweaks dont aolve, is my next step to reinstall windows? Is adding more ram viable instead? Thanks for taking the time everyone

TLDR: machine idles at 8gb ram usage before and after registry tweaks, whats is my next step in diagnosing the cause?
