Windows 10: Windows will not auto reconnect to known WiFi on boot

Im pretty tech savy, but this one is boggling my mind.

Wifi dongle I'm using is this a DLink DWA-140
Router is using WPA2-PSK

• Background info: I connect to the internet through my ISP's supplied router, i've set it up with my own SSID and my own password, it works perfectly fine with my android phone, my GF's iPhone, my tablet, my laptop, her laptop, her iPad.. but not with my PC running windows 10.
• The problem: When i boot, it doesn't always automatically reconnect to my wifi, despite having it checked as "connect automatically". My wifi dongle can see every other wifi network within 20 miles, EXCEPT my own wifi. Go figure?!

In order to get it to connect i have to hit "Connect to Hidden network", type in SSID, type in the password, which windows will prompt me is incorrect, hit cancel, wait a second, and BAM it connects to my wifi.

Things I've tried:

• This solution from this thread
• Open search, type "services.msc" open services.
• Scroll down to "wlan auto config" right click, stop the service.
• Navigate to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\ delete everything in this folder leaving only a folder called "profiles" delete everything in the "profiles" folder except for a folder called "interfaces" delete everything in the "interfaces" folder)
• Restart "wlan auto config" connect to your wireless network, enter your passkey, (ensure the connect automaticly box is checked)
• Restart your computer job done, your computer will now connect to your wireless network automaticly on boot.>

failed.

• Hiding my SSID, and un-hiding it in router config, that worked for a couple of weeks, but now the problem is back. Have tried this solution again.

failed.

• Uninstalled the wifi dongle in device manager.

• Running the router as configured by my ISP

What the hell is going on? I could buy a new dongle, but i fear it wont change a thing. Any help/input is greatly appreciated.

You are very welcome. And I 110% agree with you.

 

See first bullet point. Second, leave it alone for what the ISP pre-set it to be.

 

If that was the 'input' you had i'd rather be off without it.

I was looking for a solution and explanation why half a dozen other devices reconnect just fine many times a day to my WiFi, yet Win10 as the only device doesnt.

That tells me that the problem lies within Win10. Your "solution" didn't really cater to my needs, but rather to some poor tech smug who called the nerd herd at bestbuy *Wink

 

Gee and I thought I was the only one with this type of problem ! My problem is similar in that its like yours, but when I run the win 10 trouble shooter, it says "one or more network protocol's are missing". Then the trouble shooter continues and corrects the problem. Like yours, I have other devices that have no problems. The router is a Netgear 1750. The router comes with its own diagnostic utility "Netgear Genie", and it tells me there is no internet connect, and it asks to corrects the problem which it does. I haven't checked the link you provide for attempted fixes, but have you checked for Firmware updates for the router or dongle? I have had about three on my router since Windows 10 came out.

If you use TWC we could be more specific but I don't use the ISP Gateway except as a modem. I prefer to keep the actual routing on my own device.

Have you tried turning off all other Wi-Fi connected devices in case there was some type of compatibility with one of them? Is there just the one router you connect to, or are there others such as work?

Are you using Wi-Fi Sense in Windows 10?

As I understand it, even if the SSID was hidden, the connection should connect after once being set up. So it sounds like that profile is being corrupted which might explain the password situation. I am looking for where Windows 10 hid those profile settings but so far, haven't found it.

Edit: What anti-virus are you using? Any messages in Event Viewer regarding the problem?

 

Even though you select connect automatically it appears its not saving a profile. Go in the settings and add a profile and save it. It will then connect on reboot. That's what worked for me when using a usb dongle.

Wanted to update this issue. Its been over 30 days and after applying DUDE's recommendation I haven't had a boot up situation where I lost my wireless correction. Looks like it fixed the problem.

Storageman there is a long thread about the missing protocols. That comes from 10586 that caused that.

 

PhillOS first step of troubleshooting is put the Gateway back at the ISP settings.

Also get rid of any software you installed fr the Dongle. Windows 10 will automatically load the proper drivers.

Third is get rid of any third party security software.

If another program is handling Wireless Zero Config. The Wireless adapter will not automatically connect when turning on the computer.

It has been that way since Windows 8.1.

 

I reset everything back to default ISP router config, let the router auto config itself from the ISP's side.

This time, instead of changing the config from the admin panel, i used my ISP's website config tool.

As soon as the router rebooted windows loaded my wifi network automatically. Im working right now so i can't restart and test it just yet. But I hope the reset and different config method has changed something, it seems like it.

Only drivers installed are win10's own, no DLINK proprietary stuff.

 

Sometimes Windows 8.1 & 10 will do that, if another Service is running when you get to the Login screen, but Windows is not ready to enable the device.

 

I also have the box ticked to connect automatically but never does, even if the pc is left on all the time so not a reboot issue. also happens on 4 pc's that i use at home that never had this issue with win 7 or 8 on the same network before i upgraded them to win 10 (always reconnected automatically then) I work in a big multi national company and the network will reboot every night( security reasons) and all the pc's would automatically reconnect when they we were on win 7 and 8, but now that we have moved to win 10, all 127 pc's have to be manually connected to the wifi every day.

open network or secured makes no difference. Becoming a complete pain at this stage and have been told by my boss to go back to win 7. I even tested it on a complete clean install of win 7, 8 and 10 and only win 10 refuses to connect automatically.
