  1. Windows won't start after upgrade: "Desktop unavailable

I have an MSI laptop on which Windows 10 will not start after a recent upgrade. On startup I see the MSI Welcome screen with the circling white dots below the word Welcome, then the Windows Welcome screen superimposed over the severely blurred photo comes up with the circling white dots to the left of the word Welcome. After about 10 seconds the entire screen goes black for a second or so and then another screen with the dialog box about Desktop not being available appears. That screen contains lower left the Start Menu icon, the search box and the Task View icon. In the lower right are the date and time and an icon I don't recognize maybe the notifications icon?. The screen I just described stays on for about 2 - 3 seconds, then the screen goes entirely blank for 1 -2 seconds before the screen described above reappears -- but without any text in the "Desktop not available" dialog box. It's just an empty white box in the middle of the display screen. That screen, too, is displayed for 2 - 3 seconds before my display goes entirely blank again for a 1 - 2 seconds. That sequence continues until I shut down the laptop by using typing Crl-Alt-Del and then accessing Task Manager > the power icon > shut down using the keyboard's up arrow key.

I've found and read many threads about this problem and need to state up front that NONE of the suggested solutions I've seen so far are available to me. For example, holding down the Windows key while typing "e" DOES NOT open Explorer. I also do not have the ability to type anything into the search box because, first I have no cursor or mouse pointer to position there, and second since each screen disappears after just a few seconds I would not have the time to position a cursor and type anything there, anyway.

I did make a recovery drive, but it's more than a year old and I can't find it now, anyway. I can access the MSI BIOS screen and have changed the boot order so that a USB drive is the #1 option, and I've started the computer numerous times with the recovery USB drive from my office computer inserted, but the results are the same as when no USB drive is inserted. This laptop did not come with a Windows media disc and has no built-in CD or DVD drive. I assume Windows is on a C:\ drive recovery partition, but I have no way that I know of to access C:\. The laptop does have 2 physical drives. C contains the OS and all my applications. D contains my data files. So, I can do a complete re-install of Windows and then all of my apps without losing any data, but that's my last priority. My first priority is just to get at Explorer or some other option? to solve this immediate problem and roll my laptop back to where it was before that update. All advice will be appreciated.

    :)
