Windows won't use all threads on 6 core CPU with hyperthreading

    Hello guys,

I remade this post, as the previous one apparantly got lost, and I also forgot to include the Windows Version Number, which is Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 (Build 18362.418).

My CPU is a Xeon X5650 in an ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard with 12GB of RAM.

I turned Hyperthreading (HT) off, to test whether I got more FPS in a game. Then I turned HT back on, but windows would not see the extra threads anymore. It only sees 6 core/6 threads now, whereas it saw 6 cores/12 threads before I turned off HT.

I have reset the bios, by clearing the CMOS several times, and loaded defaults, and set everything up again, and made sure HT is enabled, but windows keeps being stubborn.

Is there a fix to this? Has anyone experienced HT being stuck like this? Is there a way to force windows to use HT again?

    Thanks in advance, Peter.

    :)

What is the difference between CPU and Cores? The screenshot below is

The DirectX diagnostic tool is pretty old, dating back to windows 95. I don’t think it was ever updated to differentiate between cpu’s and cores. back then, all cpu’s only had one core, and no hyper threading either. so if you had 64 cores, you had 64 cpus.

in general the terms socket and cpu are interchangeable, but not always. for instance, some amd packages have 2 cpu’s each with multiple cores in a single socket.

a socket is a physical package. a cpu is a collection of cores. logical processors are cores + hyperthreads (hyperthreading allows a single core to use multiple pipelines to simulate 2 cores, but the second one typically only gives about 50% of the performance of the first)

the speed is for each core. more cores don’t make it go faster in most cases. it just allows it to do more work at the same speed. the exception is software specifically designed to utilize multiple cores/processors. like ray tracing, math, and transcoders. if the work can be broken down into small units that allow multiple cores to work on it simultaneously, then it completes the work faster.

imagine an office with 64 workers. they can’t all answer the same phone call and deal with the work at the same time. the call won’t go faster. but it can answer 64 phone calls.

windows 10 upgrades on hyper threaded CPU's :

Hyperthreading is not the issue, most of the modern Intel multi-core processors support Hyper-threading. I am running Windows 10 on an i7 with hyperthreading, Speed-Step . .
. etc. and have no issues!

The problem is Windows 10 requires PAE, NX, and SSE2 to be supported on your processor

Old P4's (Willamette cores from about 2000 and Northwood cores from 2002) do not have the NX bit, more recent P4's
(Presscott cores from 2004 and later)
    do.

NX stands for No Execute page protection. NX processor bit allows the processor to help and safeguard PC from malicious attacks from hackers and crackers. For NX bit to be set,
PAE needs to be enabled first.

What you could try is to go into your BIOS and check if you have the option to set the NX or XD flag in the BIOS.

Sometimes this is disabled - you never know, you might have this setting . . .
