Windows 10: Windows XP Bootable ISO For Virtual Machine Uses Only

Can someone give me a legal copy of windows xp for virtual machine? I tried using the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Download/confirmation.aspx?id=18242 page but virtualbox did not detect it as a bootable file. I examined it and it was just files that i don’t understand much about. I wanted to download it so i can test windows xp. I’m not really gonna buy a windows xp cd since i’m not really installing on a real machine.

Running XP app in virtual machine

Most computers today don't have floppy or optical drives. That is not a problem for virtual machines because they can work with images of floppy disks and CDs. I created images files for the DOS 6.22 and Windows FWG 3.11 floppy disks. For Windows 95, 98, XP, and later I created ISO files for the original CDs. When I create virtual machines I just mount appropriate the image files. Note some of these ISO files are not bootable so I also had to create additional bootable floppy image files.

 

Using XP hard drive Virtual Machine on Windows 10

I want to use my XP 32-bit hard drive (it is in an external enclosure) on a Virtual Machine under Windows 10 64-bit. The Win 10 machine has 16 GB of RAM and 2TB hard drive. The XP hard drive came from my old Gateway computer which has been trashed.
Installed on the hard drive are Visual Basic 6 and many programs written by me. A few are compiled and function on Windows 10, but many others are not compiled. I would like to compile those for use on my Win 10 machine. A large program is compiled and
cannot run because it requires a DLL to be installed on the Win 10 machine. I prefer to use the XP hard drive (in the external enclosure) as is with the virtual machine set up if possible. I am assuming that since the XP OS and Visual Basic are installed
on that hard drive, they can function as they once did. I have never attempted a virtual machine and need detailed instructions on what steps to follow. My question is, can I do what I state above and, if yes, how do I do it?

To whom it may concern;

I have Hyper-V up and running in Windows 10. I created a virtual machine easily enough.

I want to run Windows XP Mode in this virtual machine in order to run an old software.

I have downloaded Windows XP Mode.exe from Microsoft site.

I created an ISO file from this Windows XP Mode.exe file and used this in the setup manager of Hyper-V.

When I click on "Connect" I get the following message:





Do I need to burn this file to a CD and use as a boot?
