Windows 10: Windows XP Update Automation with Update Packages from MS Update Catalog

Hello Microsoft Community,I hope you are all doing well today. I need help with updating Windows XP. I've just gotten a computer from 2008 on eBay and already have the update packages from my last machine that ran XP. The only problem is, there are so many update files and packages I have almost 600 updates from the MS Update Catalog that it will take me a very long time to install them all. Is there a way to easily automate the update process on this operating system in 2025?

Windows XP update and internet Issue

Microsoft has been shutting down some of their XP update server to prepare for the end of life of XP. That means that if your ISPs DNS servers are slow at updating then you will be trying to use servers that no longer exist.

I suggest you download the latest XP roll-up disc, it will have most of the updates you need and I also suggest hard coding a Google DNS as your primary DNS in your router.

 

windows automatic updates

i have some questions about the windows automatic updates in windows xp pro w sp/2. ive got about forty updates they recommend , mostly for security but i only installed two today. after installing them i found them in my add/remove programs in the control panel, if i add all these updates that is a lot of space on my hd almost 1 gig. i thought that updates just updated files and not created new programs. should i innore all these update suggestions from microsoft?

Is it a domain network? Can use WDS (Windows Deployment Services) for remote installation and WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) for easy updating. WSUS is basically a local Windows Update server. Through Group Policy you can control how often each machine checks for updates, whether is automatically applies them without user intervention, which ones are allowed/prohibited, etc.

Personally I like that approach because I then only update the installation image every service pack, not for every hotfix/patch. The WSUS server is what keeps every box updated, new install or not, without each machine having to pull the updates from MS individually.

No domain, but still have a lot of boxes to keep updated? Can still use a WSUS server I believe. Could probably even create an automated installation disc that will configure the stations to use yours instead of the default MS Windows Update server.
