  1. Windows10 Update: kb3093266 - What Does It Do?

I received a Windows 10 Update #kb3093266 today, and it's now waiting for me to re-start the P.C. to complete the installation.

The problem is that I only see one reference to this update on the internet, and it's in Japanese. As usual with Windows10, the link "more details" takes you no place. Anyone know more about this update by chance? TIA.

  3. cumulative update install problem

Last week - week before Windows Cumulative Update KB3093266 began trying to download and install, and kept failing. I eventually tried the solution at post #9 at Windows10 Update: kb3093266 - What Does It Do? - Windows 10 Forums
and it seemed to work. However, just yeseterday it started again - with KB3093266 AND a new update, KB3097617! They are both listed as needing to install on the Windows update detail screen, as having previously failed to install on the Update Log screen,
and I get "Update failed" notification when booting in to Windows. BUT they are listed as installed in the installed updates screen! What is going on here, and can I do anything abut it?

Windows10 Update: kb3093266 - What Does It Do?

Says it's a cumulative update for Windows 10 x64-based systems and will take 10-20mins. I risked it and it installed very quickly.
I'm hoping there is something in there to stop my system hanging and needing a reset, and then finding a dead NIC and having to dump an older image back.

  5. This update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10.As Microsoft has stated before, it doesn't intend to publish detailed changelogs for Windows 10 updates unless they contain significant feature additions or changes. However, according to a video published on YouTube by one user, the update appears to be related to "ESET Smart Security protocols." As an additional note, the update isn't yet appearing on machines running the latest Windows Insider build, so it's possible that this is pushing out to non-Insiders only.
In any case, you should be able to pull the update — which clocks in at a hefty 226MB for 32-bit users and 505MB for 64-bit — through Windows Update now.

For me it keeps downloading the update and then asks me to reset the PC...

Once i hit reset it says its preparing the update and then resets the PC only to come back onto the desktop telling me that the update failed and when i go back to check for updates there it is once more wanting to re-download it again.... crazy stuff really... OMG a cumulative update that wont even install itself correctly? well done MS....

Anyone have the link where we can download this KB directly and then manually install it?
or even a solution on how to get this KB to install correctly....

    your support is welcomed.....

    cheers

Just installed on my 32-bit machine unexpectedly, no problems, pretty quick. But, like kire612002 says - ticking time bombs now....I always cringe as I install any update anymore (and I'm making very frequent images too).

  11. This update KB3093266 may cause a recurring update failure (12 in my case) addition to your update history logs or in other words, your pc will enter into a continuous update failure loop while using the win10 auto update feature. There exist a myriad of fixes for this issue on the web and I tried several with no positive results. I was however, able to fix this problem, based on earlier experience with other MS OSs on my PC.
A corrupt update to the win software distribution downloads and the software data store is causing this problem (In my case)
To proceed. The entire contents of the C:\Windows "SoftwareDistriution\Downloads folder must be deleted first. Restart your PC to verify this deletion before proceeding to the following instruction set.

Follow these instructions to effect a cure for this problem:
Method 2: Steps to erase Windows Update historyNote:Erasing the windows update history will just remove the entries of the updates and not really the updates itself.
    a. Go to menu Start> All Programs> Accessories. Right click on the "command prompt" and select "Run as Administrator".
    b. Copy/paste the below command:
    c. net stop wuauserv
    d. And select OK.
    e. Wait until confirmation that the service is stopped.
    f. To delete the file, copy the following command in the command prompt:
    g. del %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log
    h. You can also delete it manually by going to the location in windows explorer.
    i. you can restart the service with this command:
    j. net start wuauserv

Windows updates failed, Want to delete all failed update files in - Microsoft Community

As I said it worked for me and I was chasing this problem down for about 5 hours. FYI it should clear your update history file of all entries up until your latest and newest update. Don't worry it does not erase the actual update and when everything is working in the win update world as it should you will have a new history file showing hopefully, only a good KB3093266 install. After everything has settled down and your version of Win10 is fully functioning again you may view all your win updates by clicking on the "uninstall update" tab in the View Your Update History page.

This a larger update more than 1 gig after the install is complete. The Excel file accompanying the update in itself is about 1.8mb in size and it appears like a rewrite of the win10 maybe even the core program. Please correct me if I am wrong.

No warranty or guarantee of any kind is provided with this instruction set. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE NEW USER.

  12. If this advice was posted to the Microsoft help forum back in 2010, will it work with Windows10, without adversely affecting the next update?

  13. Windows10 Update: kb3093266 - What Does It Do?

JAllenChicago, I can't answer that for anyone else but me. However, for Win10, since the data store was cleared the next update, actually the KB3093266 update in this case, downloaded and updated immediately after a restart from performing the above mentioned fix with no failure to install issues. It is now in my clean history log.

This update was failing for me with error code 0x80004005. This fix worked for me EXCEPT I did not need to delete the entire contents of SoftwareDistribution\Downloads. I just stopped the Windows Update service, renamed edb.log, restarted Windows Update service, and then the update downloaded without incident. Thanks a lot!

  15. Excellent, LopeDoggie. It looks like the solution you found and shared is catching on. It's too bad that the majority of users don't visit forums like this. They call Uncle Louie, or just put up with annoyances.
