Windows 10: WindowsTool_Install folder on my C: drive with entire Windows 7 on it.

Hello.

So I was cleaning my C: drive, when I saw the WindowsTool_Install folder. It's odd because size of it is 10,9 GB, but "size on disk" is only 311 MB.

Also when I open this folder I see like I was in another C: drive- There are PerfLogs, Program Files, Program Filesx86, Program Data, Users and Windows.


After searching for a bit, I found out that this is all stuff, that you'd find on Windows 7. No, I did not have Windows 7 before 10 on this PC.

Also, when I try to open anything it just says Error / not possible to open.

When I try to delete something I get a popup that I need permission from TrustedInstaller.


Let's say I want to remove "Sample Pictures" folder in Public-Pictures. If I delete this folder, it works absolutely fine, no problems whatsoever. But if I try to remove just one of those "pictures" they won't open it gives me an error 0x80070780: The file cannot be accessed by the system.

So it's like I have whole Windows 7 on my C drive in a special folder.

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.

 

Vista Ultimate - 'User' Folder Location

No tried that.

Can copy the entire folder to D; but Windows still points to C as the location. Can change personal folders location to a folder on D;, but this still leaves hidden files etc on C;. Thus meaning there are 2 Users folders. Have managed to change the Public folder location to D;, with some registry tweaks, but this doesnt seem to work for the entire folder.

any more suggestions

 

How to format on Windows 7

just format from the installer on the windows 7 DVD. the options there when you choose which drive to install on.


i suggest partiotining the drive, i run with a 60GB C: drive, but then move my user folder to the D: partition - so that when i format/reinstall, my desktop/my docs, etc, dont get lost.
