Windows 10: WinDVD 12 pro can't play blu rays due to aero settings.

Title says it all, I bought WinDVD 12 pro for full compatibility with Win 10, I previously had installed WinDVD 11 pro fully patched & up to date so did work but I hadn't checked it in a while - a few months. WinDVD 12 will play DVDs fine but blu ray discs I receive an error saying it needs to disable aero to be able to play, I choose to allow the program to do this but it does nothing afaict as I still get the error, I then went to turn off 'use transparent taskbar' under Win 10 but still the same, I even turn off all enhancements under system & used the basic theme (although as yet not all at the same time).
I uninstalled the program & reinstalled WinDVD 11 pro but that too gives the same error. I suspect a Windows update is the cause.
Is there anything else I can try or should I just get a refund?

How do I play a Blu-Ray movie on Windows 10?

VLC Player will play DVDs with a installation of a additional library (libdvdcss) - libdvdcss - VideoLAN

Ideally, the best Blu-Ray players is Corel's WinDVD Pro or Cyberlink's PowerDVD 15 Ultra.

I have WinDVD Pro which works just great in Windows 10.

Same for me using WinDVD 11 pro, thought it was the program so bought the 12 pro upgrade, that's the same, my error says 'allow WinDVD to disable Windows aero environment - afaik Win 10 doesn't have aero. Thankfully got a refund.

Personally I think a Windows update has done this as ver 11 worked previously.

 

Hi, that sounds like a bug as aero isn't available in win 10. I'd take it up on their forum/with their support.

I noted this in the change log for it (for an older version). I t may point you to an option which might help.

Edit: I've looked at that setting & it's greyed out as it says it only applies to Windows 7.

Thanks dalchina I will look into that, although I have looked through every setting it may be something I missed.
I contacted support via live chat but they passed me on to technical support who have asked & been sent a screen cap of the error message.

 

Support didn't help so I have received a refund.

I think VLC may have some Blu Ray support built in -- I'm afraid that I've given up on Physical DVD's now since sky Q gives me most of what I want (and increasingly in 4K UHD TV which is approx equiv to Blu Ray quality or better) and from what I remember in the UK the cost of NETFLIX for a year is about the same price as buying 3 Blu Ray DVD's retail anyway and they have an increasingly good selection -- especially if you can bypass UK stuff to get USA version !!.

Blu Ray IMO came too late to the market -- much better ways to get content now - even SKY Q can be saved to HDD via a capture device which you can then either stream with PLEX directly or convert to MKV/MP4 and play on phone / tablet etc.

Check that it can handle DRM / encrypted stuff -- I believe most commercial Blu Ray DVD's are encrypted or riddled with DRM (another reason I don't like modern BLU Ray's).

If it works fine - but I'd be surprised if it can handle a lot of the new stuff unless it updates the decryption keys for the Blu Rays --and they might have trouble with Hollywood for doing that anyway --so don't get too dependant on a single piece of software in case it stops working.

@jimbo45, I will keep an eye on things with the software, we have a proper blu ray player for home anyway so am not reliant on the laptop player. Anything new usually comes with a digital version so can use that via Flixster.

That's fine -- On the rare occasions I get a Blu Ray I RIP it with something like AnyDVD or equivalent and then stream it via PLEX to a smart TV or an Amazon Fire TV box.

Stand alone domestic Blu ray players are a whole different issue to playing / ripping on a Computer. !!
