  1. [WinPE] [diskpart] Issue Assigning All the Drives

    Hi,

I often set up NAS's with VM's for my customers, and I try to test the hard drives before we send them out. However, I'm having difficulty assigning drives in WinPE. I want to run disk partition and run them through a stress test first. WinPE first boots on them to make sure they're okay. However, I'm running into issues on diskpart. When I have more than 25 drives, however, I run into a roadblock. Some systems have 40+ hdd's. I can't assign more than 25? If I don't assign, I don't have the ability to write to them in WinPE.

example diskpart that I try to keep neat.

    select disk 0
    clean
    convert gpt
    create partition primary
    select partition 1
    format fs=ntfs quick
    attributes disk clear readonly
    assign

    select disk next
    ... and repeat.

My plan B is to leave them as physical disks and run checks with NTFS, but I can't seem to mount them through any bat scripts. Is there a better way I may be able to get this going?

Running Windows 10 Professional WinPE through build 2004 and ADK.

    :)

  2. Installed windows 10 and now my f drive is gone

    Hi Dayton,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.

Initially, I suggest you to check for the drive in disk management.

    • Press Windows +R
    • Type diskmgmt.msc and press enter.
I suggest you to assign a drive letter by using Diskpart if you find the f:\ drive by following the steps below:

    • Click Start > type
      diskpart.
    • Right-click diskpart in results above > click
Run as administrator. Click OK for the prompt.
    • Once diskpart loads type list volume, press
      Enter.
You will notice that you will see your partition that you use for your data, it should not show a drive letter assigned to it.

    4. Type select volume X (replace X with the volume number assigned to the partition in question).

    5. Type assign letter Z (replace Z with the letter that you want to assign to it).

After the action is complete, try accessing the drives.

Hope the information is helpful. Feel free to
write to us for any other assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.

  3. I am missing a hard drive on my computer.

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused with Windows 10.

    1. "I cannot get my processor menu to open on startup.", are you referring to BIOS menu?

    2. "When I was first installing Windows 10 on my Computer", did you perform a clean installation or did you upgrade to Windows 10?

You may follow the below steps and check if the drive is listed in
    Disk Management.

    1. Press Windows key + X and select Disk Management.

    2. This will open a new window named “Disk Management”. Here you will be able to locate all the drives that are present in your system.

If you see the drive listed, I suggest you to use Diskpart tool to assign a drive letter to the drive and check if it helps.

    Follow the steps:

    • Press Windows key + X.

    • Click on Command Prompt (Admin). Type the command and hit
      Enter: diskpart

    • At the DISKPART prompt, type: ‘list volume’ and make note of the number of the simple volume whose drive letter you want to assign.

    • At the DISKPART prompt, type: ‘select volume n’
and select the volume, where n is the volume's number, whose drive letter you want to assign, change, or remove.

    • At the DISKPART prompt, type one of the following: ‘assign letter=L’ (Where
L is the drive letter you want to assign or change).

    • See if this helps in restoring the drive in
      File Explorer.
Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

[WinPE] [diskpart] Issue Assigning All the Drives

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.
