Windows 10: With system image on USB HDD, do I need a recovery drive on a thumb drive?

I am using Windows 10.What is the difference in these two?I already have the complete image of C drive and system and boot partitions.In case of system failure, unable to boot, can I use that system image from the USB HDD to repair the installation or to reinstall the image?What is the use of these two things? the system image and recovery drive.

Win7 System Image on USB Thumb Drive = NO?

Just got my laptop all re-set up with Win 7 pro and Office 2010, including about 500+ updates. Decided to make a system image, needing about 100GB of space, so I went out and bought a Sandisk Ultra fit USB 3.0 128GB thumb drive. When I went to do the backup, it said the drive needed to be NTFS (it was exFAT). So, I reformatted it to NTFS, but then it simply said it couldn't create a system image on that disk. Why?

I plugged in a 2TB WD USB 3.0 passport drive and it created the system image to that no problem.

ps... I returned the USB drive to Best Buy. By the way, it was a good deal at $34.99, though the performance was not at the 150 mark as advertised, but close for read.

 

Win7 System Image on USB Thumb Drive = NO?

USB drive was literally hours off the shelf, and I did a FULL format (not quick) back to exFAT after trying that, no errors or problems. It appeared that windows image backup didn't like a thumb drive... ergo the question.

 

Thumb drive not suitable to store system image

I got a thumb drive thats 1TB. I tried to do a system image onto this drive and system indicated that its not NTFS

I reformatted my thumb drive to NTFS, remounted it and try again. This time the error message was "the drive is not a valid backup location" under that thumb drive "D"

What should i do next? I could have used a DVD but I will need to go buy some DVDs for this backup. I always thought system image should be able to be created onto a thumb drive.

*In this context, D was the drive that system has assigned as I have only ONE HDD drive C:\
