With Windows 9 on the Horizon, Windows XP Users Are Still Unsettled

    Hi there
Windows 7 would seem to be a No Brainer for corporate updates -- however there are still a LOAD of big applications that really still only work on XP -- I'm speaking here for example often of the GUI needed to access corporate applications like SAP / ORACLE / home grown DB applications etc. These often take YEARS to upgrade and are expensive too.

IMO the best way would be for corporations to look at installing a proper VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) across their networks --then they can run whatever OS they like (even on Windows 9 client Machines !!!).

XP provided it doesn't need to access the Internet directly is quite safe run in a Virtual environment - and users still like it too. Remember businesses don't always need the latest hardware (and hence drivers etc) so running in a Virtual environment solves that problem neatly. It's also the best mechanism for BYOD systems too.

In a VDI environment it's quite easy say for the users desktop to be mainly XP but with say a front end application to access the Internet - this could connect to say a W2012 server running IE for users so even with XP users could still connect to and run applications safely from the Internet.

    Cheers

  2. You denigrate yourself Joan and A Guy is right with his statement about you being extraordinary.

Consider this, how many of your friends at around your age know what you know about computers?

  3. Thank you for the kind words Wolfey, can't answer your question but I just love technology and like to keep up with it if I can afford to. Mind you I do like to do one better, hubby got himself a Kindle eReader, just the cheap one and I was going borrow it, I'd already got the Kindle app on my computers so had some books.
Second thoughts no I wanted my own but more up market so I have a Kindle Fire HD 7" and love it.
What did annoy me was I have a Nintendo DSi XL and got all the games in the Professor Layton series, so what do they go and do but bring out the Nintendo 3D machines and the next in the series can only be played on that grrrrrrrr at the moment there's no way I can afford to buy one so I can't carry on playing the games, not happy. *Sad

One that comes to mind is The Co-operative, not sure what they run in their offices but in their stores they have a console machine you use for your home delivery and that is still running XP, I know because I often have to switch it on to boot up if the staff haven't done it on the day I go in. Don't know when they'll be upgraded to run something more modern. *Wink

  5. My lass was in exactly the same position Joan when playing Prof Layton so she sacked any Nintendo crap after that and I bought her a Kindle HD 32GB machine.

That was ok for certain games but she likes to play Hidden Object games and sometimes she could not click on a given object at the edge of the screen.

She now has a laptop and runs the same games and she is over the moon.

  6. I like the Hidden Object games as well, plus the 3 of a kind match up, but I don't play games that much and hardly at all on the computer, I just don't have the time. I have the Kindle Fire HD 7" but it's mainly for reading books, I'm still playing and exploring it though only had it since the end of January. *Wink

XP user aren't unsettled they just don't really care one way or another. They will continue to run their systems until something really bad happens, then cry wolf, and just hope that someone on one of the many tech sites can help them fit their problems. . .*Redfaceops:*Redfaceops:*Redfaceops:*Redfaceops:

The reason why people are not upgrading their Windows XP system is because they can't. Almost no system that came with Windows XP installed can be updated to Windows 8 because of the additional requirements of Windows 8.
