WOL stopped working after upgrade from Server 2012 to Server 2016

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

    :)

  2. Stop Windows 10 upgrade on domain

Is there an update available to Server 2012 (non R2) to stop the Windows 10 upgrade via Group Policy?

This link only provides updates for Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012 R2, nothing for Server 2012 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3065988

Is there any .admx files I can download from anywhere?

Was this a fresh install or just a inplace upgrade? Do you still have the backup of your previous install? Are all of your scripts still in place, along with the tasks, etc.? Try this. Always use the Microsoft Technet site first, since they are going to have the best information. Configuration Manager Charles Allen’s Blog Tomsitpro.com is also a very good website for this kind of stuff.

    Thanks for the reply!

This was a in-place upgrade. I took a backup of my original configuration before the upgrade, but I don't have a spare drive to recover the image to at the moment. I wasn't using any scripts in the 2012 install. WOL just worked. The link provided is pointing towards SCCM, which I don't have any intention of using, unless there is a specific reason why I need to use it. WOL shouldn't require any additional software to function.

  6. In Device Manager, make sure that "Allow the computer to turn off this device" is disabled for network adapters. If this does not help, you may try to install the same network card drivers which you use in windows 7, they should work.
