Windows 10: Won't activate Windows 10, but will activate Windows 7, same key.

I clean installed Windows 10 Pro x64 in VMware and used a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 key to try to active it. No go.

However, Installing windows 7 Ultimate x64 in hyper-v, the same key activates win 7.


Any ideas?

I apologize for the delayed response.The Windows 7 key won't be accepted to activate Windows 10. If your copy of Windows was activated successfully after you upgrade from Windows 7, then you won't have to activate on subsequent clean install of Windows 10.
if the activation was not successful after the upgrade then you might be prompted to enter the product key. In this case, you will have to install Windows 7 again, activate it with the old key and then perform an upgrade.

 

Windows 10 won't activate

Upgraded to free Windows 10 Home edition from Windows 7. Used produkey to understand what activation key but windows 10 settings won't allow activation. Help?

 

Until the new build comes out (build 10586), you can't activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 Product Key. You can try this method, but you would have to install Windows 7 on the same VM first:

I installed Win 7 in Hyper-V and Activated it with a Genuine Key.

I then clean installed 10586, skipping the Key code screen. Windows 10 wasn't activated when I finished the install but when I entered the Win 7 Key it activated.

 

Windows 10 build 10586 was supposed to include that capability. Glad to hear it works!
